Vinman1
Hope all are well. Looking for 8" rear drum brake set up for Ford Cortina rear end. Need backing plates (aka Anchor plates), drums (4 x 4.25" PCD). Been searching for a while, any info / options greatly appreciated. V

TheDingo8MyBaby
A 1970 cortina will likely be the 9" brakes, but they still should work. Dave Bean or JAE may have them. If you're willing to pay for international shipping, there are some UK cortina facebook groups you can try.
Vinman1
Mr Turner at Turners Auto Wrecking was great, gave me time on the phone, went out in the yard, and checked the Cortina. Unfortunatley, no rear brakes on the Cortina they have. Ken at Dave Bean is checking for me. Did not think of JAE, will contact them. I have a beautiful Leyland Ital axle set up that I can't use because of the Triumph wheel stud spacing. I am going to take some measurements, It may be possible to re-drill the backing plates and drums and use that whole brake set-up on the ford axle. Not a FB person, which seems to be the way everyone is doing it these days. Too much screen time as it is...
MV8
You might consider using matching bolt pattern wheels and front hubs, or same design wheels with a slightly different spacing bolt pattern spacing to fit the rear. What are the cross over years for bolt patterns and what are they exactly? I don't know off the top of my head. Vinman1
Ford wheel bolt pattern is 4 X 4.25" PCD. Triumph is much smaller. My wheels are original KN British made that up until now, had never had tires or valve stems in them. So they have to stay. I have been all over the web for two plus years to many sites, and many emails to the UK, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and the US, and amazed that for all the hundreds of thousands of Cortina and similar English Fords of similar size produced, that a pair of backing plates, or no cross reference info can be found. MV8
Since the ital axle brkts are not going to work, why not use a six cylinder mustang II/pinto 4x108mm/4.25"pcd 8 inch axle? It's similar to the ital with a drop out center section. Edited January 10, 2023 by MV8
Vinman1
I checked into that and Comet, Falcon as well. They would be 9" or 10" I was told. The added unsprung weight is not good. In any event, could not find those either. There may be some in a Scrap yard 600 miles away. But they said you have come see if you want them for yourself and then remove them yourself. I could make the trip, but it would be expensive, counting the divorce it might cause :)!
TheDingo8MyBaby
@Vinman1, I can ask for you on a couple of facebook groups, if you'd like. I'd estimate parts to be somewhere between $100-250 and shipping to be another $100+, but if you're a serious buyer comfortable with those prices, I will ask. Just to confirm you are comfortable with 8" or 9" brakes for and english axle? Edited January 10, 2023 by TheDingo8MyBaby
MV8
I only looked for a '76 pinto axle near Cape Cod.
Vinman1
Thanks guys! The first one is in a town next to me. Its traditionally a late model yard, but I will check with them. Have some other things going too. 1) Another lead on somebody in CA that might have some. 2) someone in my neighborhoods wife is from London. Her nephew buys and sells a lot of stuff on the web there. She reached out to him 3) A friend is sending me some from a Europa, maybe the Ford drum will fit in the lip, and then I could drill them if the back spacing works too. Will keep you posted... anduril3019
Here's a great source for Cortina parts: cortinaphil@cox.net I bought a complete rear axle from him a few years ago, he had several at the time.

MV8
Size refers to shoe size (versus drum od). Pinto/M 2 8 inch brake shoes are 9" x 1.75. A drum weighs 10.85 lbs. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/ford-8-in-differential-carriers https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/rebuilding-8-inch-ford-rear/

Vinman1
MV8, Hope all is good. I got parts for the brake set up off the Capri in your listing. Going w/ 9" brakes from Capri, which is as close as I can get to the Cortina. Although rare, there are a lot more Capri's in the US than Cortinas. The rear was gone from the Mustang II. How did you do that search? The format and locating is very good, I have not been able to find any of those in my google searches? Thanks again. MV8
Most major auto salvage yards subscribe and list parts on the site. The nice part is they sometimes list prices, though they sometimes gouge for a "core fee". I always respond Oh, I didn't know you guys rebuild (insert whatever it is). They usually drop it but I don't actually argue about it. They decide what to charge. https://car-part.com/

Vinman1
Just refitted rear with the radius arm / shock weld bracket relocated to the 12 O clock position, and Capri 9" drum brake set in place of disc conversion kit. Huge difference in tire clearance! Tunnel clearance is tight as is expected, but looks to be ok. Can't wait to drive It!
