Series 2 Rear Hub question

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Series2 car with the Standard 10 rear axle.  In the past someone had fitted larger diameter studs on all four wheel hub assemblies to work with wider rims..  I'm wanting to go back to the stock rims and therefore need to reduce stud size. I'm thinking the easiest way would be to replace all the hub assemblies.  From what I read the fronts are the same as Spitfires. My question is are the rears also?

Thxs in advance - Jim

Often with wheel studs, the knurled shank is much larger than the threaded stud. Measure to compare the original stud knurl to the larger stud to determine if you can go back without modification of the original hubs. Are you sure the larger studs and nuts won't work with the original wheels?

SENC - no I do not have Tony’s book.

MV8 - we have tried original wheels on car and holes in rim are smaller than studs.  Good thought on shank size. I’ll track down some Spitfire studs and compare but think they will still be smaller in the splines area.

check on supply of studs with thread size you want, I have seen studs with much larger diameter hub size than the actual stud thread. ( think what your existing studs would look like if they had the threaded area turned down and re threaded to the size you need.)  john

Good to know what you actually have first. You can take an existing wheel nut to a parts store, mechanic, or machinist to check the thread size and pitch. Better yet, pop out a stud to check the dimensions with a dial caliper. Hopefully the oversize is no bigger than 7/16-20.

Thanks MV8. I'm picking the car up tomorrow and over the weekend will pull a front hub, press out the stud and mic it to see what I have.  Hopefully I can then find a 3/8 stud with larger splines to fit the existing hole in the hub.  I'll keep my fingers crosses.

On another subject does anyone know the source of the Series 2 rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes and drums?  Same as Spitfire?

Weale indicates that Ford hubs have larger diameter wheel studs than Triumph hubs, so that may be what you have.

Weale isn't specific about the hubs on the S2s, just that they are Triumph.  The rear axle hubs, brakes are all from the Standard 10 and Herald.  The early S2 wheels were from the Triumph/Standard Herald (3-1/2"), replaced by the 4-1/2" Lotus Elan wheels.  I don't know whether the Spitfires used the same as the 10/Herald.

You should make sure you can remove the rear hubs easily before you continue. I have standard used Triumph front huhs in stock, also new rear wheel cylinders and brake linings.

I also have a copy of Tony Weals book for sale. PM.
