Possible throw out bearing sound

Hi All,

Need a little advice on a new sound I hear. I have a 2017 360S with about 4K miles on it. When the clutch is released and I am in neutral, I hear a kind of whirring clicking sound. I am thinking it is the throw out bearing but could it be anything else? Also, I have never tackled something like this...is it hard to do, is there a tutorial out there or would a mechanic be a logical step for a green horn like me?

Thanks,

Martin

It could be throwout bearing. If the bearng is not fully disengaging from the pressure plate it might keep spinning and make noise. You may be able to determine if it's that by fiddling around with the actuating arm.

It could also be the input shaft bearing in the gearbox. With the clutch engaged and the gearbox in neutral, the input shaft still spins. A little bit of noise might be normal but a lot of noise -- or sudden change in sound -- could indicate a worn bearing. 4K miles seems far to soon for that though. They typically last longer than the synchros etc.

If the noise is not very loud and goes away with light clutch pedal pressure, I doubt any action should be taken and you can live with it until the next clutch replacement. Replacement of the release bearing involves engine removal. You could post an audio clip or link to a video to share the sound. I'm South of you. If you are still concerned enough to bring it down one day for a brief examination (with PM coordination, no charge and no motivation to sell a service or joy ride). I'm sure there are folks like that around Chattanooga, but I don't know any.
