Yupe...Alabama

Think I am your newest member, do not own a 7 yet, and as a belated 50th birthday present to myself have been searching for somewhat of a regular street driver. Power is not very important; just want something solid, reliable and resaleable, i.e., the best "bang for the buck" in the $20K-$30K range. I am 6'0" 180 pounds, and have been considering the following:

1. This 1993 Caterham (2,500 miles and Cosworth 1.7 BDR) $? [guessing $25,000-$30,000]

2. 2007 Westfield SEi ("new" with 1,300 miles and 1992 100K+mile Mazda 1.6, et al.) $21,900

3. 2004 Birkin S3 (new with 0 miles and rebuilt low-mile 200HP Zetec) $29,900

4. 2003 Superformance S1 (4,500 miles with "stock" 148HP Zetec) $25,400

5. 2001 Superformance S1 (new 0 miles with Webcon FL1 175HP Zetec) $29,995

6. Other [open to your collective suggestions]

Westfield clearly is lowest price and enough power for me, but I am not sure what to think about longevity and resalability with all of the old high-mileage parts, its fiberglas skin, and it not being able to garner more than $19,100 on several eBay auctions. I do not know how much to make of Superformance no longer being made vis-a-vis replacements/repairs and resalability. Birkin seems to approximate Caterham most closely and to be sufficiently stable in the big picture despite dealer issues. The Caterham obviously is a classic, though I am not sure what replacements, et al. to expect with the relatve age and non-use. I do not know what else might fit my bill that is available right now or shortly, though the Robin Hood on eBay concerns me mainly for its lack of the usual tubular chassis and secondarily for its locost finish.

Your various viewpoints from technical, practical and all other standpoints would be appreciated greatly. Thank you very much for helping to get me started right.

Welcome to the madness Avery! Is it possible for you to drive any of the cars listed to either rule them out, or move them up the list? I think the Westfield is a couple of hundred miles away from you, so that might be worth the trip. The Caterham in Atlanta is a bit far for a drive, but perhaps you can get a cheap flight? Not sure where the other cars are located. Might also be worth seeing if anyone on the forum is in your area so you can pay a visit and try their car on for size.

Although I'm a soon to be ex-Caterham "crazy spec" car owner, if bang for the buck is what you are going for....get the Westfield. A known car from a known source...many of us have seen it in person. Or maybe I'm just partial to Orange cars. See the recent thread on pricing (Deman sr27).

That said, the Caterham is very tempting...if only for the BDR and low mileage. I think he's asking $35k....John V. (acting Club Prez and Barber Car Museum restoration guy) could probably look at it for you.

If you have time and inclination, come up to Carlisle car show on Saturday (tomorrow May 17th) a bunch of us will be there and you can kick our tires/pick our brains in person.

Thanks, Al. I have seen your name many places many times, so certainly value your opinions.

Obviously you have no reservation about the longevity of the Westfield's 100K+ Mazda donor parts. Since yesterday the Caterham seller advised me that some authority said he should get [only] "$20,000-$30,000" for it, so at what price point would you say the Caterham becomes a relatively better buy than the Westfield?

Would love to meet all of you guys at Carlisle, but already have a young date for "first in" tickets to the Seventh Annual Beer Festival in Norfolk tomorrow . . . . And at bachelor 50, a pretty woman and libations still outstrips good-looking Sevens.

John, although listed on the Craiglist for Atlanta, the Caterham actually is more out of the way in Alabama.

Al, does John V. happen to be located close to the Alabama site or is he in Atlanta?

Unfortuantely, it is very hard for me to break away from my practice now to travel for test-drives, though obviously there would be great comparison benefit to that.

John V. is down in 'Bama...

Tough call on the Cat vs. Westfield. If the Cat didn't have the BDR, I'd say Westie easy. However, note that the BDR is a bit of an "old school" motor perhaps best suited to seasoned Se7en or at least Brit-car owners. If you are looking for a seven where you turn the key and you know it's going to get you from A to B with a minimum of fuss, a newer, injected car may be the ticket. The Mazda Westie or WCM, GM powered Stalker, Honda powered WCMs, and most of the Zetec/Duratec powered Cats/Birkins fall into that category. I don't know if I'd put the BDR (not having one nor knowing anyone that runs one in the club) into that category.

The recent thread on price not withstanding, we try not to judge asking/bought prices too much on this forum. So I won't try to say at what price the Cat becomes a "better" or "worse" buy than the Westie.

Avery

Sorry been playing in VA and PA this week. I will be back in Alabama and if you are serious I would consider looking at the car for you. I am out of Birmingham. Let me know, I may even consider selling mine (have my eye on another car, that is coming up for sale (S3, needs reassembled))

I think they actually don't put out much in stock road form...150 or so for the 1600.

But since the basic config was used in Formula cars, I think the sky is the limit.

$$$$ to fix though....

Went for $31,350. I didn't see when it hit reserve. It had been sitting at $25.5k for the last four days.

From what I read about the BDR in this form, it has 170 hp. But, as Al noted, you could tune them to the moon if you were so inclined. With 300 hp not being unreasonable.

Hey Avery,

That SEi from Autopro you were looking at...I think it was that one...just turned up for sale on the Manik used page 2 days ago

and its still for sale here on AutoPro's site.

slngsht said it was a "Solid car"...might be worth asking about if your intrested in something now...asking 23900

And Jeff Sloan (BritAuto) said he "might" be getting a used caterham in "in the next couple of weeks"...i got to see the one he was talking about...2 other people had been asking him to post pictures of it...but I haven't seen the pictures posted yet... so it could have already sold... or he might not have actually got it yet...never know.
