Eloquent thoughts on driving

Recommended Posts

I thought this was a very eloquent description of why I enjoy driving, and I want to share it. Full credit goes to its author......

"Very few experiences in my relatively short walk on this planet can

match the satisfaction of taking a piece of sporting machinery out for a

twilight run through the countryside. It's so incredibly easy to become

obsessed with traveling from one point to another within a certain time

constraint during the work week, and it does me good to occasionally go

for a drive or ride to nowhere for no reason other than to enjoy the

sense of freedom that a well designed car or motorcycle can offer.

This evening was such an occasion. I just got back to the house from a

brisk drive through northern Limestone county with my dad in the

Stalker. After several years on the road the car has been tuned to the

point that it is quite literally an extension of the driver's mind, and

it was running and handling beautifully tonight. The weather was also

pleasant: the temperature at sunset was about 70 degrees with calm

winds, some light cirrus clouds, and a nearly full moon. I've covered

the same roads countless times over the years--both on two wheels and

four--under similar conditions, but the experience never seems to get old.

Classic sports car + open road = gearhead nirvana.

I couldn't agree more.

Last Saturday, being the first good day in several weeks, I took my Ulltralite out for a tour on some twisty roads. I decised to take a liesurely cruise, because you never know how much traffic there will be an a Saturday, vs a weekday when I normally cruise.

At the beginning I kept telling myself " You are not racing, you are not in a hurry, you don't need to power drift the corners". After a few minutes of both sharp and sweeping turns, dips and rises that revealed vistas of forests, under a 70 degree clear sunny sky, it all became the "Gearhead Nirvana" that GBOLT described.

All relaxation...... seven heaven.

  • 3 weeks later...

weather report this morning..the weather girl, looked at me with her buisness blond hair and said...."go Drive your se7en".

ahh yes the promise of bright clear sky warm and welcoming. a perfect day to go dancing in the sun.

I slid the barn door open and could almost hear the aluminum swell with the morning photons. Cover off, dancing/driving shoes on, i bowed to my partner and asked if she wanted to go dancing this morning..i turned the key into the juke box and selected some sweet xflow music.

for those of you who might dance..thats exactly what driving the se7en is.. the driver is like the lead...the se7en is the beautiful woman in his arms.. together they are art in motion.. the movements, the sway, the dips and turns..it's a dance.

So i led my partner se7en this morning, onto the asphalt floor. and we tango'd down the road.

we felt sad for the ford focus we passed, windows closed they couldnt inhale the aroma of the lilac bushes planted on the highway ramp..neither would the zetec in it ever see more than hauling groceries.

and on we went..skipping over a few loose boards on the dance floor, jostled about but never falling.

a roundabout between highways..ahh such a perfect place to feel my partners movements and slide around to the next position, her heels squealking lightly around on the floor.

but too soon as always...the song reached it's end, at we had arrived at work.. sorry dear but i must cover you up so the sun doesnt burn your skin while you wait for me..and there she sits...ever patient waiting for me to once again turn her keys, start the song and go dancing again...

8 hours away...

and we get to dance with our sailboat all weekend as well!

Here's my description of a drive in the 7, even after 7 years .

It is shod with r-compounds 24/7

First drive in the spring when it hits 50 deg F.

I get in the car, insert noise plug in Left earhole, back out of the driveway.

shift the T9 into first, punch the accelerator, then..... Oh sh8t!, f785!, WOW!, Gasp!, Pant! Whee! UhOH! Whee! Haha! I'M ALIIIVE! WOOT! etc etc.

After I stop. I have to sit for 30 sec, otherwise I'll fall on my butt, because my legs and hands are shaking, and I cannot think straight enough to socialize.

It is impossible for me to take in any scenery, except hazards, when I'm driving it. :)
