Oil Pump Selection?

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of re-assembling my refreshed ZX1 engine.

The oil pump may still be O.K. but the gears are a bit scuffed and while I am at it I can just as well replace it.

Looking up the usual places I find following brands:

Kragen:

- AE Clevite $ 280

- Sealed Power $229

- Melling $214

Autozone:

- Hi-Tech $172

- Melling $140

Summitracing:

- Melling $143

NAPA:

- Unknown brand $240

So, any reason not to use the Melling pump from the auto store?

In another post Gary Slutz mentioned an HP oil pump but I am not sure what that is.

I understand that Quicksilver had a billet pump at one time but maybe not for the ZX1.

BTW, I am going to use ACL Aluglide aluminum-silicone bearings as recommended by the engine builder.

Thanks,

Gert

Gert - Northern Auto Parts has the Melling M213 oil pump for the ZX1 available for $113.46. I’ve never used them before but might be worth a shot.

PS: I've never seen a HP pump for the ZX1 motor.

Hi Gert,

The one I purchased came from a member and he didn't use it, prior to selling his car. He treated me very well on price.

It was from CFM # M6600ZX# and was with the Billet gear. Their contact info is: www.c-f-m.com 407-339-9211

I wanted the Billet gear pump as I had read of failures at 7,500 RPM + with the others.

Folis gave me a heads up on rear main seals leaking, not the seal, but the seal housing gasket. He told me he changed a few seals till he did the gasket correct. I would go over to the Birkin site and pull up his posts or ask him for more info.

I am planning on replacing my stock pump with CFM's SVT oil pump (referenced above). They are, however, on backorder until around the 11th of July. It is a stock Ford pump, only with billet aluminum gears instead of plastic. Supposedly, it is no more durable than a standard pump, but it will take greater revs. The stock pump gears come apart over 7400 rpms. The people there are friendly and helpful, and the parts I have purchased from them so far are 1st rate.

Plastic, what???

Obviously the ZX1 oil pump is different from the ZX3 and SVT pumps. The pump that I removed had some pretty good looking ground steel gears. No Plastic whatsoever. And probably no wonder that it is more than 2x the price of the ZX3 pump?
