Cicuit City closing all US stores

One caution... when they closed their stores here in Arizona the sales went to a "liquidation specialist".

It seems that almost all of the good stuff went somewhere else. The specialist then raised all the prices back to full retail, before discounting them 25% to 40%. In many cases you could buy the same thing cheaper elsewhere.

The final insult was that they brought all kinds of junk in that CC never carried at outlandish prices.

If you go, know what something is worth before you assume you're getting a deal.

BTW, my wife told me that Mervyn's did the same thing when they had their "going out of business" sale.

Man CC closing all US stores and letting 34k people go. I knew that they were hurting. They shut down a store here that had only been open for a year. If there is a store in your town they are going to be having a big liquidation sale starting tommorrow.

I went there this morning, hoping to find a good deal on a wii. Out of stock.

The local competition is going down the drain with it. Some 5 years ago we still had "The Good Guys", Circuit City, Fry's, CompUSA and BestBuy as electronics specialists. Now only Fry's with few stores and BestBuy are left.

But it is understandable. The competition from the Internet anyway but also the likes of WalMart, Sears, Office Depot who cherry-pick the profitable stuff is tough. Maybe just another set of dinosaurs gone, and the economy is just triggering the extinction like that asteroid...

Bakersfield's Circuit City store was their #1 store (in our paper today). Sad that a store that was doing well locally gets shut down.

I think the internet and no tax has made a big impact.... the tax thing may be changing soon. On the upside you can get the exact item you want on the web while they might not have that particular model in the store. On the downside, you better hope you know exactly what you want because there's little customer service/expertise and you can't see/touch it.

Sign of the times I guess.
