slngsht
visited the local drag strip with a friend friday night. kind of got the bug to run it sometimes, but in speaking with the tech guy, I will need a full cage and scatter proof bell housing. I asked him if a blanket is OK and he said it has to be a bellhousing, not a blanket. So... where can I make a nice wide open run (standing quarter mile)? public highway not acceptable Alternatively, if you have a full NHRA acceptable bolt-on cage, show me some pics. slngsht
New Highway Construction site .. not yet open to daily use. Private Airway landing strip. Abandoned shopping mall. Ask a police officer to clock you! Rob Landing strip is the only one there that has potential. I haven't heard of any of them renting out to cars for that purpose though around here. Bob Drye was telling me about one in the Carolinas that does a flying mile type of event around this time of the year.
pi7ot
Trailer it to Maxton N Carolina (ECTA sanctioned event) and do the standing mile. Old WW2 glider training base. If it gets above a certain speed they'll want a cage and other safety gear on it. But by then you know what it'll do. m
Hank
http://www.nhra.org/contacts/tech_faq.html A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.49 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.49. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs. The rollbar must be constructed of minimum 1 ¾ inch o.d. x .118 inch wall mild steel tubing, or 1 ¾ x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram: http://www.nhra.org/images/rollbar.gif If the floor and/or firewall has been modified, then a full roll cage is required beginning at a 10.99 e.t. A full roll cage is required in any vehicle running 9.99 seconds or quicker, and any vehicle running 135 mph or faster (regardless of e.t.). The roll cage must be constructed of minimum 1 5/8 o.d.x .118 mild steel tubing, or 1 5/8 x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram: http://www.nhra.org/images/rollcage.gif FWIW, I would think my rollcage would pass NHRA and IHRA certification. http://hanksmegabusa.com/images/120608/10.jpg
DB6
Hank, What is the weight of that?
slngsht
Hank, I would think so as well. if they are a stickler, they might say something about lack of a diagonal where the doors would be. I could live with the first design in the drawing, but I'm pretty certain my car is faster than 10.99...
scannon
The local drag strip here has test and tune days. I suspect with a roll bar you could get in a run or two with no problem. If you don't get a good launch, sandbag the rest of it and try again. If you get a good run and exceed their set limits they will not let you run again, but one good run is all you need. I plan on doing this sometime in the future.

Spaz
David, The total weight of the car, or just the cage? I don't know either. Hank I think you need to make a post to guess your cars weight. My guess would be 1,100 to 1,200 lbs. not including Hank. My car I am told is 1,100 lbs, 400 of that is motor.
DB6
the roll cage, it looks strong but heavy.
Kitcat
Spaz: I would be surprised if the Honda motorcycle engine in your car weiged 400 lbs. Even my mighty Crossflow lump isn't that much. I would guess 175 lbs for your engine. Or do I have your car mixed up with someone elses? Overall weight of 1100 lbs seems believable. I wld guess Hank tips in around 1050 lbs, rollcage and all. pi7ot
A 3.2l six out of a '99 M3 weighs 336lb. A 2.3l four out of a 91 M3 weighs 240Lb. A sub litre bike engine/ gearbox would weigh much less. m
Hank
I'm not starting a weigh in thread until all of the pieces are on the car and I weigh it. She better be under 1000 lb!
