Carb? Problem cont.

Recommended Posts

I guess I was too quick in hoping my problems were over. (See thead http://www.usa7s.com/vb/showthread.php?t=3988). Still not running right. Maybe a little more detail will help identify the issue. I replaced the magnetic pickup for the electronic ignition and there was improvement. The thing is, where the car previously ran a little rough at lower RPMs it would quickly smooth out and rip to the redline. Now the the car is relatively smooth at low RPMs but runs rough under load and at higher RPMs. The car idles fine and starts easily. The carbs still spit and snap although not as much and there is still some backfires, usually when I shut off the engine. I hope I'm not being a pain but any help would be appreciated before I send the car out.

Maybe it's normal? My Crossflow is anything but smooth-plenty of popping, occasional backfire. Nothing like a modern ECU-managed, fuel-injected engine. But mine has always gotten smoother, etc., at higher RPM's, sort of clears its throat and then goes.

Check your ignition wire resistence values (use a digital ohm meter), install a new set of plugs and have someone with the required skills set your carburetion and ignition timing. Additionally, with the symptom(s) exibiting themselves, observe coil firing via inductive pick-up timing light connected to the coil wire. Firing should be constant without any interruptions in pulse. Also, carburetor idle mixture as well as synchronization is crucial. Good luck.

I agree with Skip, it sounds like your timing is retarded.

Normally, if it were too advanced you would have the reverse situation, hard start buy smooth at higher revs.

If, after you have checked that, you want some help on going through the carb set up, holler at me. I'm on the road until next Sunday and will be checking email sporadically.
