athens7
Ok, some respect is due AMC for making a series that doesn't beat us over the head with everything, assuming we are too stupid to "get it" if it isn't completely explained. I like the utopia/distopia concept, and it is interesting and not a little bit relevant that 6/2 is convinced he can build a better utopia, especially since he was so desirous of the downfall of the village. Hubris, even with the best of intentions, is dangerous. On the other hand, the idea that we could all live in simultaneous conscious/subconscious planes, wirelessly connected to each other (or the mainframe that hosts us), and existing in a world that is the subconscious creation of a single, again wirelessly connected, individual, is quite a leap, even for suspension of disbelief. Oh, and if someone who came from the real world dies in the village, it would seem that they are just out of the game, and not dead in the real world, if Mrs. Curtis' condition at the end of the show is any indication. Hell, everybody should just jump in the holes, then! All in all, though, better than much of what passes for network TV these days, I think. It did get better as it went along, IMO. wallisek
As a show standing on "itself" I'd give it a C. As far as being a remake of the original it was utter garbage. I thought acting was good, detailed sets, and was definately THE VILLAGE. Credit deserved there. The problem I thought was the storyline. Junk junk junk. Anyone else notice the old man was wearing the same black/white border suit McGoohan wore? He also could have passed for an old version of No 6. When the new Six found the old man's sketch of Big Ben it irked me a bit. Kind of an insult to McGoohan if you ask me, implying No. 6 never escaped. /thumbsdown
spotcheck
........... As far as being a remake of the original it was utter garbage.......... /thumbsdown The producers said from the get-go it was not a remake. Rather, it was to be a modernized re-interpretation. So from that perspective you would be saying they certainly met their goal. Mr McGoohan had lobbied to be cast as Two in the new show (but they went with Mr McKellan instead) so it's hard to imagine HE saw it as an insult. And the first action in the new one? They kill the old six/old series and Six buries him/it. Literally. Pretty direct message - "forget it folks - its gone." The Big Ben sketch was another homage, telling us he never gave up, never quit trying. You think the original Number Six ever escaped? Really? What about the final episode of the original - Number One was who? Number Six was certainly a prisoner, but a prisoner of his own mind. Did that Village ever really exist, or was it a metaphor? One that existed only in his mind - maybe on a subconscious level? Hmmmm.....that's starting to sound suspisciously like the new show. And - at the end - everyone is chanting "Six is the One" - pretty straightforward. Story lines about spies and the cold war have been long put to bed. The tech-savvy people in this forum - tell us about "data mining." Or read a blurb from today's CNN.com about Google's next move: "Chrome OS netbooks will not have traditional hard disk drives -- they will rely on non-volatile flash memory and Internet-based storage for saving all of your data. All the applications will be web-based, meaning users won't have to install apps, manage updates or even backup their data. All data will be stored in the cloud, and users won't even have to bother with anti-virus software: Google claims it will monitor code to prevent malicious activity in Chrome OS web apps." All data will be stored in the cloud, and Google will watch over it all to keep us safe.......now, THAT makes me feel MUCH better. Cold war spies never touched us personally, but Summakor?? Hello, people. Last - Recall that the ratings for the original were awful - the viewing public emphatically gave it a thumbs down. At that time, anyway. Be seeing you. solder_guy
Now that it has been a few days for me to rethink this remake .. I agree with a lot of what has already been written .. it is appropriate for our information age .. There were these lines in the original series: Six says, "The whole world as the village?" Two says, "It is my dream." Are we more like residents of the village than we like to think? Rob
spotcheck
Are we more like residents of the village than we like to think? Rob Rob - This - and the original - weren't intended as a Bond James Bond, or Jason Damon Bourne riveting thriller - they were hoping we would think carefully about the point/message. Honestly, I think that is how they were able to land a cast that included Mr McKellan, and partly why they declined to use Mr McGoohan's estimable acting skills as Two - too much focus on the past (although - if they had used him as 93, that would have been wild, but too much of a frontal assault IMO). I believe your question is dead-nuts on target. For both versions of The Prisoner/Village. Be seeing you. [PS - keep dry!!]
GustoEater
Behind the WRX in one shot is a 7 driving through the parking lot. It was Red and Orange, I believe, but was unmistakable. (Sorry if this was mentioned, I have not read the entire thread because I didn't want to spoil the ending for myself...still have one episode to go). By the way, just joined the board...long time Lotus fan, hoping to someday buy a 7. Fell in love with them when I saw The (old) Prisoner for the first time.
