What is it made of? Is it metal or plastic or unobtainium? That is my favorite grille for the seven. I know they won't fit my own grille opening, but I might could modify one and retain the center "7" logo.

Thanks in advance...

IIRC, it's painted metal. Mine is grey.

Hopefully Mazda or Rob will chime in, because there's this vendor in the UK who can custom make one to size and probably even vary the size/shape/font of the "7" (which, it is my duty to report is a registered trademark of Caterham Cars Limited).

Stan "Soareyes" has a very nice grille on his Birkin, which is a more stylized verison of the "7".

Just my 2 cents.

I had an awesome experience with Martin in UK. Definitely get the steel parts.

I had a great experience with Martin. He makes custom 7, laser cut, stainless steel Grill(e)s to fit .. even our V shaped Rotus nose cones!

Man, thanks for the responses guys. Based on the prices of the various parts Looks like the guy Martin would cost me about as much as getting one from RMSCI that I could modify. The current exchange rate stinks... The one with just the badge that Jim pointed out is really the part I was looking for and has a decent price. I can build the rest of the grill right off of that. The idea is that the "7" will color match the body, and the rest will be black. Again, thanks for the good info. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/cheers2.gif

I made mine by bending and soldering 1/8" brass rod. I still haven't figured out how to post pic's yet. Russ

I used to have this grille (I can email a .pdf with the graphics):

but found after a while it looked too much like the Superman logo.

Later I found that Carlos Fenny from the Birkinowners list had designed a nicer grille and had it made by a friend with a CNC machine from 1/8" aluminum like like this (same as Stan's grille):

slomove,

That second grille really looks nice. I had given some thought about modeling one up in CAD for the Locost nose and getting it laser cut. By the time I did all that and paid for the one off laser run I could have bought a Caterham unit and modified it with less trouble (time invested).

I went ahead and bought the one that Locost V8 posted up from the UK. My plan is to build the rest around it like Russ described above...only I will use steel rod welded.

Hey Slomove,

Your se7en looks very fine (in the pics) especially going fast and I love your "riddler" grill.

Is it just me (or an optical illusion) but how much does your pan protrude below the space frame?

My Busa has a Koenig swivel pickup pan (to reduce exposure to road rash and still it sticks out about 1 1/2 inches below my space frame.

Busa, I have a bog standard Raceline wet sump under my ZX1. That would leave me something like 3" clearance with the 15" road wheels.

However, the local mountains are crumbly and rocks abundant, so I made a well armored sump guard that reduces the clearance to about 2". This means more ground contact but less damage:

Obviously the clearance is even less with 13" track wheels. But so far no problem.
