slngsht Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 wow. I probably wouldn't stand there like that.
scannon Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 wow. I probably wouldn't stand there like that. If you ran, you would likely be dead. They did exactly the right thing. I ran once from a mama moose and her calf but I was on a motorcycle and had a head start. The calf and I came head to head on a dirt road in the mountains. I stopped to see what the calf would do. I didn't see mama at first and the calf and I were just staring at each other about 20' apart. I caught some movement in my peripheral vision, glanced over to my left to see mama about 30 yards away and headed my way at a gallop. I laid on the horn, reved the engine and popped the clutch figuring the calf would either get out of the way or I would chance an off road excursion on a street bike. The calf gave way and I blasted down the road. Had I been on foot I would have been dead or badly hurt. Freezing in place was not an option as she was charging when I first saw her.
solder_guy Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 I've seen two patients in recent years with torn scrotums as a result of encountering a baby deer with momma nearby.
powderbrake Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 My son and I were gathering wood for a campfire at Yellowstone, and we came across a moose cow and a calf, about 25 yards away. We slowly backed away, and when out of sight, ran all the way back. Those things are HUGE
Off Road SHO Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 A friend of mine had something similar happen to him while he was archery Elk hunting here in AZ. He had paused to take a break from tracking in a warm spot and promptly fell asleep. he awoke to a large bull elk sniffing at his camo leggings, evidently confused by the scent strips and the bow across his chest. My buddy just froze, hoping that the bull would decide against mounting him right then and there. As the bull finally decided that he wasn't a willing and able cow, started to walk away, my buddy tried to inch an arrow out of the holder but the bull caught sight of the strange motion and was gone in a flash.
