paulmpetrun
Anyone here from Ohio, and built a 7 from scratch? I have mine about done, and am thinking rather than jumping through Pa's hoops, I would register my car at my uncles house in Geneva, Oh. Is Ohio reasonable about registering a 7 that was not purchased as a kit and does not have any certificate of origin or a vin of any kind? Will they issue one once it passes there inspection? Also how tough are they for receipts? I have most, but just in case I don't have one for everything, I don't want to worry about having to explain nonsense. Lastly do they require a full windshield? A friend registered his Caterham there with only Brooklands screens, and from what I remember they told him to just get a windshield, but nothing more. But that was also 10 years ago, anything change? Thanks very much Paul Petrun
JohnK
Call your uncle's local Ohio State Patrol and ask for the number its inspection station. Having had a rough time of it with my "kit", I've checked out the process beforehand (as thing are, I don't expect to show up at the State Patrol garage with an inspect-able vehicle till later in the year). I've talked in person with the people who do the work and we've gone through my paperwork and found no problems. Basically they want to ensure that "an owner assembled vehicle" is made from parts that were bought and paid for legally. "We are NOT a Safety Lane", was one thing I was told. The only thing that caused some concern were the bills of sale - the builder was, shall we say, "a bit casual" about saying that I'd paid for the big pieces. I finally hassled him/builder enough to get reasonably documented and authorized receipts and the chief inspector was fine with it all. He also said that, when I was ready, be sure to allow myself some lead time - depending on the season, they can get a few weeks behind. In this area there used to be EPA inspections, but that's disappeared due to the difficulties in ensuring fairness between the different affected locales' emission generation. Several years ago the State Patrol said that, after their inspection, they'd send me to the EPA, but this time there was no mention (and my local EPA inspection site is closed. Hope this helps. PS - I got a letter from OSP HQ OK'ing polycarbonate Brooklands screens. Edited March 2, 2010 by JohnK
PATENT
Paul, Just in case you want to go through Pa's registration, here's what i went through. You know you need an enhanced inspection, all your receipts,(forget the small stuff).I also needed a defroster, two wipers, and get this BUMPERS.If you get into pa.dot subchapter k, it will explane more.My title is a SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED one. It's a 7 kit. I sent my paper work in in Oct. and I just got my title and vin plate last week. Good Luck Joe
glenntwincam
in sept. 2008 we purchased a 06 caterham that was built & reg.in ny. transfer to ohio title required a simple inspection , verification of vin & mileage. then apply for plates. this car would not pass emission test (no cat) so we applied for & received collector vehicle plates. my point is get titled in ohio if it is easier, then if there a emission insp. problem you can apply for collector plate which is emission exempt. this works for caterham's because ohio bmv recognizes it as a collector vehicle. hope this helps a little. yellowss7
Here's the Pa DOT subchapter K. Curiously, there may be an out on the Bumper requirement for some if they accept Caterham as an authorized manufacturer and they state that bumpers are not part of the original design. (b) Bumpers - A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with front and rear bumpers securely attached to the chassis, except when the original body configuration provided by a recognized manufacturer did not include bumpers in the design of the vehicle. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/pub_45/section_k.pdf However, I just found this section which seems to say that: Specially constructed, modified, collectible vehicles and street rods may not have an original manufacturer’s specification. Therefore, these vehicles are required to meet Pennsylvania vehicle equipment, inspection and operating requirements in order to be titled in Pennsylvania. Applicants must provide a detailed description of how the vehicle is configured, constructed and equipp,,, Seems that Bumpers may be required if a SCV cannot have an orginal manufactures specification. ???? I Built mine and registered it in Pa. in 2001 and luckily had no issues. Had my plates and registration in less than a week. They did not require a special inspection station back then, but all the other regs were the same. Best of luck with yours.
