tire size for 13 inch wheels

Recommended Posts

What would folks recommend for a tire size for 13 inch wheels 6 inch wide on a 1962 Lotus 7 that has been heavily modified (zetec engine 180 hp, 5 sp close ratio, LSD live axle)? There does not appear to be a lot of options for 13 inch tires in the USA (UK seems to have all sorts of options)? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/confused5.gif

Most of the DOT R compound tire mfgrs. sell a couple of 13" sizes that might work. Hoosier, Toyo, Hankook, and maybe Kumho all sell 185/60-13 and 205/60-13 tires. They range in price from $110-150 each. The 185 should work fine on the 6 inch wheels. The 205s, although not ideal, could be made to work on a 6 inch wheel as well. If you are looking for just street tires, then Sumitomo has some various 13" sizes (for cheap).

The very best tires that I have ever used are the Kumho V 710s which will fit your 6" rims. Stick like crazy and very driftable. The downside is that the street mileage will be terrible and when it rains you will learn a lot about the meaning of "aquaplaning". Think about a second set of rims if you are planning to autocross or do track days.

The Yokohoma AO 32s have finally come down to reasonable prices on Tire Rack and are a good all around tire. These are a better choice than Avon CR 500s when price is factored into the equation.

The Avon ACB 10s are also good and very light, but much inferior to the V 710s as a performance choice.

Brad, what size wheels do you have with the Kumho 710's? Do you run the same size wheel/tire front and back? It looks like the only 13" size Kumho makes in the 710 is 215/50/13. Thanks!soareyes2007-01-23 08:35:26

I can not compare the ACB10 with the Ecsta710 in driving behavior because I never driven the 710s (it looks like they have softer compound than the "Caterham" ACB10 compound A33). However, one of the reasons I picked the ACB10 is weight (besides a lot recommendations). The 8" ACB10 (245/45-13) is about 11 pounds vs. the 18 pounds for one 215/50-13 Kumho.

Extrapolated for all 4 wheels I would guess a difference of more than 25-30 pounds unsprung and rotating. That is substantial and in terms of accceleration it almost counts double. So my thought process was why spend money on light rims and waste this with heavy tires.....

Obviously the ACB10 are no fun on the road due to tramlining.

Wow, that is a big weight difference!

As I look into this more, I'm finding that most track radials are designed for heavier cars than ours, whereas lighter bias plys like the ACB10 can work well on lighter cars. (broad generalization with many exceptions I'm sure!)

You could get the ACB10 in a softer A30 or even A24 compound but that is probably an expensive proposition in terms of wear and maybe a special order. But >Roger Kraus has them on his tire list.

I lied, to a degree....I just weighed my wheels again ad found the following:

                     Front(new)       Rear(50% tread wear)

Rim Width            7"               8"

Wheel weight (lbs)   23.4             23.6

Rim weight (lbs)     10.4             10.8

Tire weight (lbs)    13.0             12.8

nominal Inches       7.0/21.0-13      8.0/22.0-13 M

nominal Metric       195/50-13        245/45-13

max width @19psi     210mm            245mm

tread width          170mm            210mm

So the weight difference to typical 13" radials is not as dramatic as I posted first but still significant, maybe 16-20 pounds total. Also interesting that the nominal tire sizes have only remote resemblance of actual measures.

Stosh, You are correct, there is only one 13" size made in the V 710 Kumho. The recommended rim widths are 6-7 1/2". Currently mine are running on 6 1/2" fronts and 8 1/2" rears with no problem. I bought a used set for $100 to try 'em out and I was just amazed at how good a one year old set of used tires could be. I have another set mounted on 8" fronts and 8 1/2" rears.

The guy that sold me the used tires had run them on 8" rims with no issues. He thought they were in the best ever category too. These are not raelly a suitable street tire, although they are DOT legal.
