Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.

"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.

"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended," Dominic Maciel, Galli's friend, said.

The boys really had no choice, and went home to avoid suspension. They say they're angry they were not allowed to express their American pride. Their parents are just as upset, calling what happened to their children, "total nonsense."

"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Julie Fagerstrom, Maciel's mom, said. "All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They're expressing their individuality."

But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

As for an apology, the boys and their families say, 'fat chance.'

"I'm not going to apologize. I did nothing wrong," Galli said. "I went along with my normal day. I might have worn an American flag, but I'm an American and I'm proud to be an American."

The five boys and their families met with a Morgan Hill Unified School District official Wednesday night. The district and the school do not see eye-to-eye on the incident and released the following statement:

The district does not concur with the Live Oak High School administration's interpretation of either board or district policy related to these actions.

The boys will not be suspended and were allowed to return to school Thursday. We spotted one of them when he got to campus -- and, yes, he was sporting an American flag T-shirt.

In Arizona they just would have had to show three forms of ID

that might filter out half the school

Even the white skinned ones, that is if they actually ask for id from white people

I'm betting more than half the white people in any normal school can prove the legality of their residency in fairly short order... say within 24 hours.

And will those white kids also be detained for those 24 hours while they are coming up with said documents?

I'm betting if white kids started having to prove their residency, their families would be crying that their civil rights are being violated in fairly short order

How about this:

My kids have to prove their vaccinations are in order EVERY YEAR before school starts. We have to have all the paperwork in a week before school starts.

Do you think they have the nads to ask for proof of legal residency in schools up to a week before school starts? Nobody has to be detained. No paperwork? no school.

And, there is a place where they can be justifiably offended if someone displays an American flag. It's called Mexico.

That's fine, but that's not the point, the law in AZ doesn't apply to just school kids.

And BTW, my post about the ID was in reference to the kids wearing the T-shirts, i.e. they would have had to provide three forms of ID in order to wear a shirt with an American flag on it, you know to prove that they're a "real" American

Cut the patriotic bullshit! This was not an issue about the flag, patriotism or liberalism ( I know what you right wingers were thinking ) this was an issue of a bunch of kids being bigots and trying to piss people off, and a principle trying to avoid having any trouble in his school, nothing more!

What these kids did was no different than going to a predominately black school on Martin Luther King day wearing shirts that said "White Power!"

I bet they didn't do this on Saint Patricks day

It is about a lot more. It's about an immigrant (legal or not) living in another country, and being offended by someone wearing the host country's flag. Exactly what is offensive about that? We have parade participants from many different countries march down main street on Memorial day. That's part of being open. This crap will make me want to discriminate.

It's about a minority group refusing to blend in with the values of the country they want to live in, and expecting to be accommodated.

I'm an immigrant. But above everything else, I'm an American. I still celebrate the Persian New Year, and don't find it offensive at all if others don't recognize that "national holiday".

I guarantee you no school official will ask you to remove the American flag from your clothing on St. Patrick's day. Are you kidding?

You are equating wearing something with the flag on it to wearing "White power" in a predominantly black school? Really? If I see a Hispanic wearing Red/White/Green on 4th of July sitting in my establishment, is it OK for me to say "hey Amigo, today is 4th of July. Turn that crap inside out or you're gonna get bounced." Cause YOU KNOW he was just wearing that to cause trouble, right?

Because Mexican immigration is a hot button issue in this country and clearly these kids were trying to get a rise out of the Mexican-American students by wearing it on that day.

Wrong! It's about some kids trying to show some pride and celebrate their heritage on ONE DAY OF THE YEAR and some other kids basically telling them to F*** Off! That was what was offensive, it had little to do with the flag (it even said in the article that if was any other day it wouldn't have been an issue), it was the timing and the message that was the problem!

That's not what I said now is it?! I said I bet these kids didn't decide to show up for school wearing American flags on their clothes on St Paddy's day, point being they specifically targeted Mexicans

Are you really comparing a random establishment to a school? Really?

And I bet you would kick someone out of your establishment if the rest of your customers were getting pissed off about it and there potentially would have been violence. And as a matter of fact, I have been kicked out of an establishment for wearing a shirt with a flag that didn't jive with the folks inside.

I'm an immigrant [Persian]

So you're a terrorist then :seeya: ;)

Explain to me why it's a hot button issue with people. There must be a reason, right? I'm sure you think it's just racism.

I assure you there is no issue with celebrating their heritage that ONE DAY OF THE YEAR. It has a lot more to do with the other 364 days of the year.

Here is exactly what you said: "I bet they didn't do this on Saint Patricks day". I'm saying nobody would care if they did. nobody would even notice.

I was going to say school, but schools are closed on Memorial Day and 4th of July. Again, you are missing the point. WHY DOES SEEING AN AMERICAN FLAG IN THE UNITED STATES CAUSE A POTENTIAL FOR VIOLENCE?

So you're a terrorist then :seeya: ;)

Been pulled aside in the "random" search area at the airport many times. No problem. They're not doing anything I wouldn't do. And if I see a suspicious looking middle eastern running from a SUV, I will probably call it in. Call me racist.

OK guys lets all step back and take a deep breath, it is starting to get mean in the tone of the posts.

Have a nice evening and be cool and lets not get mean.

Huh? The reason for it is irrelevant and a whole other topic! The fact is these kids decided to to do this specifically on a mexican holiday to piss people off.

I assure you there is no issue with celebrating their heritage that ONE DAY OF THE YEAR. It has a lot more to do with the other 364 days of the year.

really? Assume much? So why haven't the students been asked to remove said American flag shirts, etc on the other 364 days?

:banghead: One more time... the kids wouldn't think of wearing American Flags on St Paddy's day because they are not trying to send a message to Irish kids, they specifically targeted Mexicans.

Your point is irrelevant to what I am saying!

Again, you are missing the point. WHY DOES SEEING AN AMERICAN FLAG IN THE UNITED STATES CAUSE A POTENTIAL FOR VIOLENCE?

No, you miss the point, it's not the fact that it was an American flag, IT'S THE TIMING AND THE MESSAGE THEY WERE SENDING BY WEARING IT ON THAT DAY!!!!!!!

How hard is that for you to understand?!!!! They were basically giving the Mexican kids "the finger" by wearing it on that day, they were taunting them

Been pulled aside in the "random" search area at the airport many times. No problem. They're not doing anything I wouldn't do. And if I see a suspicious looking middle eastern running from a SUV, I will probably call it in. Call me racist.

So you are fine with being stopped by the police and being asked to prove your citizenship when you are say, out walking your dog, or in a park with your wife and kids? And what if you weren't carrying ID ( I go out for walks without ID all the time), so they detained you at the police station until you could provide proper ID? You would be OK with that too?

I don't have any more time for this, you're so wrapped up in the flag and your "patriotism" that you can't even see that this isn't even a patriotism issue despite what these kids families are trying to portray it as in the media

See ya! :flag:

Nice to watch 2 liberal bullshitters fighting for nothing. Talking about racial tensions and profiling.

For your info, I just got out of Jury duty. Profiled by the court of law and sent home.

Heeeehaw!

Bush made this illegal aliens a political issue - so as Clinton and so as Obama. They think having illegals will be good for thier future votes.

Nobody gets the beating except you and I. One day, you will need the emergency room. I hope you, yes you the tax payer who finance your community can get a decent bed & proper medical help.

Hell, if the liberals & socialist would like to spend money for these illegals I will go along. Let's all go to hell like GREeCE.

So stop this nonsense T-shirt bashing, there are more important issues than wearing

dirty t-shirts made in USA & Mexico.
