MightyMike
Does anyone know how hard it is to swap out a Zetec ZX1 for a newer ZX3 motor? Do many of the components swap over (e.g. header)? I'm spitballing this idea now - if too difficult, will work with what I have. Mike
Croc
Is there much difference between the ZX1 and the ZX3? I thought the power output increase was only marginal. Does it make sense to go for the SVT Zetec and then use that as a base to step it up?
MightyMike
I don't know what the differences are. I presume they engines share similiar DNA, but do not know what bits are interchangeable. I am interested in the newer ZX3 as it seems to have a wider variety of performance parts available due to the popularity of the Ford Focus. slomove
If you swap the whole engine that is not a problem. Pretty much plug and play. You can not swap most components, though (different head, water and oil pump configuration). But why would you want to change. In terms of performance both engine are just the same (given same build stage). Only advantage of the ZX3 is the easier availability of aftermarket performance parts. MightyMike
I don't suppose I have a terribly good reason to swap out the engine. If I keep the ZX1, I do plan to put on a new fuel injection system. Thought there may be some real advantages to swapping out, but I suppose not. Appreciate the feedback and suggestions. pi7ot
You can reuse the intake and exhaust manifolds, flywheel etc. The advantage of the mechanical lifter ZX3 is, again, the larger aftermarket from Focus Sport etc. Another advantage is that service from US vendors is prompter/better than the casual/tardy practices of some UK based Vendors towards their overseas customers. I sourced ZX1 cams from England and had to wait, then send my brother who lives in London, to encourage them to send me the merchandise I paid for. m
