A Short Ride Today

I took another ride today and I have a few musings to relate. The SU float jets were stuck again. A bit of fiddling with a screwdriver and a small shot of starting fluid helped me get going. It is hot and humid today but a bit of breezy turbulence kept all but my transmission side leg cool. I went for gas but the neighborhood station was closed. Rush hour is too crazy to drive to another gas station so I put it away earlier than I had planned. I left the house with only one gallon showing on my trusty dip stick!

I added a modern suction cup mirror to the top of the windscreen. It helps quite a bit. With one side mirror a low center mirror and the high center mirror I can now adjust things to see much more than the top of the spare tire and the right rear fender.

Usually I have been driving while wearing Piloti driving shoes. Today I jumped in with my grubby boat shoes. It is much more difficult to work the clutch and brake. The stiffness of the driving shoes makes the perceived pedal effort much less.

The car got dusty sitting. I need a car cover.

Hopefully I can find some non-ethanol enhanced fuel and run an autocross on July 3rd. With a bit of thought I might be able to rig up a video camera to record my run. Now that would be interesting. Very few cars assume the cranked over position of the 7 when pushed hard. The exposed wheels make it look even more extreme.

The light weight Tyvex cover for my MINI fits the 7 like a glove. Goes all the way to the ground and snugs up at all four tire contact patches.

Thanks for the tip. Where can you find a Tyvex cover at a good price.

New to this board, also looking for any better first hand info on car covers. I've tried running a seach on usa7 forum entries, and this thread is, so far, the only forum link I have come across.

A google web search turned up several sites purporting to offer "Custom car covers" for Lotus 7 chassis - e.g. www.CarCovers.com (Lotus Seven 1971 - 72) and CarCoversDirect.com. The covers seem to come in several different versions/layers depending on the material chosen. There is also www.CarCoverWorld.com which appears to offer a custom fit service, but I am not having any luck online trying to connect "Lotus 7" 19xx to any form or order link. I am going to try to contact them by email or phone. In the mean time . . . .

Does anyone have any direct experience with car covers "customized" to fit the Lotus/Caterham/Birkin/Stalker etc. form?

Any thoughts on how likely a Lotus cover would (?) strech to fit, for example a Stalker configuration?

Any idea or thoughts vis-a-vis a Lotus/Caterham cover fitting one of the other chassis, e.g. a Stalker?

Thanks, Mike

Hello Mike,

First welcome to the forum.

Now as for a car cover for a seven you might want to find a local upholstery shop that makes covers for boats as they can usually make any shape and size cover for you and they have all types of material to select from and can usually recommend what type of material for the type of use that you want it for such as a light nylon cover for dry storage to keep dust off and the local cat that gets into the garage to the three layer type of material for storage outside that will keep just about anything from getting to the object that is underneath it due to the shear mass and weight. I my self have a cheap white sheet that I put over my 7 when it is in the car trailer for extended time when I remember to cover it. It is light and folds up fairly small and only keeps the dust from settling on the car and just seems to always be under foot when now being used which is why I do not use it that much.

Seriously try finding a local place that makes covers for boats or snowmobiles or other things and see what they say.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if this is of any interest to you, but Rich Kamp of Golden Gate Sevens (Kampena Motors) at Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) who built my Caterham in '03 sold me a fitted cover that fits like a glove....a little spendy at $215 (then) with the only identifying labels reading C54GK & " Block-It" ™ fabric. It's grey in color, very light, elastic all the way around the bottom, and appears identical to a Tyvek fitted cover I used to have on my Esprit........bottom line, they are available but would check w/Ben @ Caterham Denver or Rich Kemp.

http://www.carcoversdirect.com has a few covers listed under 1969 lotus seven. I ended up getting a storm force cover since I have an SV model. That said the carcoversdirect covers look more secure than my stormforce cover. I lock mine mainly to keep it from getting blown off and to prevent a passerby from removing it, which did happen once.

Speaking of mirrors. Does anyone know where to get the classic suction cup rear view mirror? It is too easy for people to sneak up on me when I drive the Seven.

I bought a suction cup mirror from Europaspares out of the UK. It was cheap, $6 or so. I was looking to find a smaller mirror than the one that came with my Caterham and all I could find in the U. S. were the fish eye type for watching a kid in the back seat. The suction cup portion on the one I bought wasn't the best and broke in hurry but the mirror was decent and fit the standard Caterham mirror bracket. With the mirror at the top of the windshield I had a lot of vibrations but moving it to the base of the windshield helped a great deal and I am very happy with it. They had several to choose from.

Finally had a break in the heat here in the tropical Midwest and took the Caterham out, not had many chances to drive this year but this weekend looks promising.
