Vancouver Island Sevens for 2012

I hope you are still doing this in 4 years, when I go back home with my Deman permanently. Meanwhile, I hope everyone has a great time, and perhaps I'll chance a meeting during a visit. I have to say, Oregon and Washington make a great trip on their own. The roads are fantastic, but compared to the moon sized nie de poules (potholes) we have around here, they are all great out there.

So it's on for Aug 4,5,6? I don't know which body I'll have on my Kubota Locost by then, but I ought to be able to throw something on. The Lolaesque body is likely to be inside a mold-in-progress around then, but lordy knows I've got enough Se7en-style body parts around here. I think I can get to the island from the California border without any of those annoying fuel stops along the way...

chrisc and lancylad,

Do you know if there is any chance this fantastic-sounding Vancouver Island blat can be added onto the tail end of next year's Grizzly Bear Blat, or as an add-on option for folks who don't get enough driving on BC roads in the GBB itself?

I can't make this year's Vancouver Island tour, but am planning to drive down from Anchorage to do the GBB next year. It would be great to have a Vancouver Island tour at the end of the GBB -- or even just have a copy of this year's Vancouver route book, if nothing else.

Just a thought.....

It is starting to look bleak that I can make it in the Birkin. I won't feel confident in such a journey until I shake it down.

I may still be in for the drive with the new Jeep though. Kitty still really wants to go.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully mine will be ready. That will be nip and tuck as well. My parts should be here for Monday, at the latest Wed or at least thats what Paul at Burton Power told me this morning. :-/

Well, despite silence we are still hoping a bunch of you will come. I have some personal challenges, but we have a new SuperStalker and Gill will lead you on the 4th for some or all of Nanaimo-Victoria-Port Renfrew to Nanaimo. Barbecue at our place and we are thinking of hiring security so that anyone in a hotel can leave their car at our place safely overnight. Sunday breakfast and then to Merridale Cidery en route Victoria for those leaving that way.

Could all of you who still are planning to come let us know with a confirming email (chriscampbellattelus.net) soon. I recommend ferry bookings - very early 4th to Nanaimo; early to Victoria. Depart Nanaimo Sun evening or Victoria late aft 5th. We may be able to get a friendly rate at a local hotel if we have some ideas of numbers. The beds chez nous are grabbed, but we do have a couple of couches if needed.

We had 18 expressions of interest and I think lost two! Who is really in?????

BTW - summer arrived today!

I don't know what MAX is going to look like (the nose is having a mold made from it...it seems some other folks like the Lola look) but it'll have lights and a horn, so I'll be there. And I'm very much looking forward to it.

It looks like most of my money will be going into ferry fees, so I'll be bringing a sleeping bag and a tent.

Let's see, a streamlined body from the waist on back, probably clamshell fenders on the front, a sleeping bag and tent lashed to the roll bar...I'm gonna look like a one-man remake of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Just spent 12 days with British Car group around BC interior. 11 days of rain.

At least you will have nice weather. It will be hot, so get started early.

Catch you on the next one.

Some of you will gather in nanaimo for the fri night and join others who will overnight in the Victoria area or come in on the Sat morning ferries. We will plan to run the loop through Sooke, Port Renfrew, Lake Cowichan and end up back in Nanaimo for Saturday night. On the Sunday, some might like to do a west coast run to Tofino/Ucluelet, we can stay local and end up at the Crow and Gate or we could do a mostly backroads and vineyard/cidery run to deliver some back to Victoria.

Open to thoughts...

...my thoughts are: I think it's a 400 mile drive from the ferry terminal in Port Angeles to my home in Cave Junction, and I don't think it's a trip I want to start at 9PM--nor do I want to catch an early ferry Sunday and miss the Sunday blat. Will there be anything happening on Sunday night? Are there other folks planning a Monday departure?

I have been working for this trip for a long time, but fear I won't be able to make it. If the car is ready for the trip, it won't have been fully shaken down. I think I'm going to save this trip for next year, and enjoy it the way I have been envisioning it for the last half year.
