supersportsp
If weight is a concern, the lightest performance tire available readily in the US is the Toyo T1-R. I did a ton of research, specifically around weights and this tire was typically at least 1.5 pounds if not more than 2 lbs lighter per corner. It doesn't have the outright grip of an R-compound tire, but it is certainly a high performance tire. Avon CR500's are the lightest, even lighter than the T1-R's, but they can be difficult to get here and pretty spendy. I have Avon ZZR's on the car now. They are supposed to be for track duty, but I didn't have my car out much last year so I just left them on all the time. I did several track days on the T1-R's and they held up great. Not nearly as grippy as the ZZR, but they did the job well enough for me to have loads of fun.
twnpipe
Toyo's and Nitto's I've had Nitto NT01 205/50/15 mounted on 15x8 Panasports and happy with them. Now deciding on a dedicated track day/autocross tire as these will be worn out half way thru a track day Saturday. The Buttonwillow tire shop stocks Nitto Proxis with a new RR tire in 205 also available are 225/50's. Current NT01's are 22.5 tall, RR are 23 1re 23 and 23.9, don't know weights. I have 300 hp in my CMC miata turbo and want to make the most use of it. Too much tire? I turn down the engine and run 195's on the street. thanks Edited September 20, 2012 by twnpipe
Kitcat
Not sure about the Nitto Proxis, but suspect 225 what-evers will be fine on a 300 hp Miata. I ran 225's on my plain old Miata at the track, with good effect.
twnpipe
The panasports I have now are very wide on their offset and at some point I have to redo the rear fenders. Has anyone tried 15 x10 wheels ? Is this better on the track or too much weight. ? If have to build wider maybe best to go all the way. The car had 225/40/15 Avon when i got the car but the bead on one tire was busted. I can't find Avons. Picture is my 195 street tires. thanks
turboeric
The Hankook RS3 is a very capable street tire class autocross tire that comes in 225/45x15. Very popular in the high hp Miata world. What's your bolt pattern?
Jackal
My experience with good street tires for Auto cross was limited to the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs. I loved these tires on my WRX (3400 lbs) and was able to compete well in the SM class. Great advantage to these tires in the wet.
twnpipe
My tires lasted for the track day Saturday so I have time to look at Hoosiers also. Some of the autocross guys buy slicks used. on ebay big price difference on shipping to the west where I am so need to find west coast source. Whats rain ? 150 days without a drop locally - Central Coast California.
MichaelD
Hoosier 225 -45 -13s A6s or R6s compound are great for track days. Hoosier bias ply slicks 20 x 13 x 9.75 might be the best autox tire. Avon 20 x 13 x 8.5 Rear and 20 x 13 x 7 Front are the lightest bias ply slick and I think are the best track tire on my Seven. But they wear much faster than the Hoosier A6s or R6s. Toyo R1As are a great everyday tire and a good track tire after the tread is about half gone. The 205 x 13 is even 23" tall which gives my car plenty of room to clear most road irregularities.
JBH
On Lightning at NJMP, I tried the R 888 185/60/13 in the front and 205/60/13 in the rear and I have to say, I like them a lot. The car is balanced and predictably - very neutral handling. They seems to stick as well as my Hoosiers and the fronts are just a little bit narrower so they do not rub on the front wing supports. Not sure if I'll every try them in the rain, but they are supposed to be very good. I bought mine from Tire Rack, heat cycled.
twnpipe
I have only 3.5 inches road clearance with my 15" 23 inches tall tires currently which are the Miata/Honda 4x100 bolt pattern When I loose my last common sense I will order the 15 x 10 949racing Miata wheels Why use either bias or radial ? I'm thinking A6 Hoosiers if they'll last 20 track days. very good information from autocross forum. http://www.rahulnair.net/blog/2010/0...te-experience/
MichaelD
get the R6s and you will get 20+ track days from the. In julu and August they will even get slippery in 30 minute sessions. The A6s will get slippery much quicker in July and August. Both will do fine in cooler weather.
twnpipe
Sorry was just dreaming of 20 days , my Nitto's didn't do 20 that many, but I also used them on the street.
DavinceCode10
Kuhmo XS or Dunlop Direzza StarSpec are also excellent road car tyres. I would really adhere to the RA1, R888 or Advan AD048. The child r comps really fit the compact se7ens. . . . . . . .
