Engine paint advice

I'm considering doing a touch up on the paint of my Crossflow, mostly on the exhaust side of the head.

 

Looking for advice regarding:

 

1) Rust - remove? Use something like POR 15 which you apply over the rust?

2) Paint recommendations.

3) Brush vs. spray?

1, You must remove the rust...aggressively or the paint won't stick. POR 15 won't tolerate the heat.

2, Duplicolor hi temp engine enamel works well if #1 was done properly.

3, Comes in rattle cans.

Are you looking for a specific color? High quality or just a touch up? Is the motor in your car still?

 

I would expect that the rust on your block is just surface rust. A wire brush should take it off. If you're just looking for a touch up in a basic color, high temperature spray paint is cheap and easy to apply - just mask everything and watch the overspray.

Engine is black, it's still in the car, and just a touch up.

I've been really happy with Eastwood's engine paint. I brushed it on my engine block after removing the light surface rust with a wire brush, followed by their Fast Etch product. The Fast Etch leaves a zinc phosphate film on the metal surface, that may be used a primer.

Interesting thread as I am about to do a winter refresh on my Crossflow block. It is currently 'Ford' blue (actually a Raceline block) but I am repainting to Grey.

 

Here is a link to my the Crossflow block in my previous car that was repainted Grey before rebuilding. BTW, it was an all steel, full race engine. Beautiful!

Cheap ass paint is Best on an engine IMO.

NO high temp engine paint.. ever..thanks.

Regular paint bubbles and blisters when you've genuinely overheated the engine.. and Only then. Consider it as the paint equivalent of a yellow 'idiot' light'.

Also Rustoleum paints just fine over rusty surfaces.

After all you are only looking for a bit of touch up? Not a complete restoration paint job .

I have excellent results with POR 15 engine enamel. It comes in a wide variety of colors to match the OEM block color if desired. The key is to use their metal prep and cleaner. Prep is everything. Having said that, if I were just touching up a block that didnt have 40yrs of grime etc on it, I'd go with simple hi-temp auto engine paint.

 

I've used several POR 15 products over the years and have found them very good. The key to success or failure is to follow their directions exactly as stated. Cleanliness and prep is the abssolute key.
