Croc Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Kindly provided to me by MichaelD to clarify a debate at the NJMP track days. Here are the Caterham SCCA EP lap records by circuit - posted on the forum for reference purposes: Carolina Motorsports Park 1:41.8 Eagles Canyon Raceway 2:00.32 LaJunta :56.6 New Jersey Motorsports Park (Lightning) 1:13.8 Lime Rock Park :57.9 Miller Motorsports Park East 1:45.7 New Jersey Motorsports Park (Thunder) 1:30.3 Pikes Peak Int'l Raceway (w/Oval 1-2) 1:05.3 Pocono 1:44 Pueblo Motorsports Park 1:39.8 Road Atlanta 1.35.4 Roebling Road 1:17.2 Summit Point Main 1:20.4 Texas Motor Speedway 1:32.4 VIR - North 1:38.9
James A Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I think a lot of these records are going to fall as the SCCA has given and will likely continue to give anything made by Mazda a lot of leeway, more hp, less weight etc. Mazda is a big sponsor in SCCA and they do "effect" the rules! Just go to the GCR and look at the restrictions on Catherhams and those on anything Mazda, quite a difference.
Croc Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Sorry James I think I may have unintentionally confused you. These are not the class lap records but the fastest lap by a Caterham on that circuit within class EP. I think on many of these circuits the lap records are probably now held by the Mazda guys within that class exactly for the reasons you point out.
James A Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Oops I misunderstood! We still have fun battling the Mazdas, but SCCA gave the RX-8s a 100 pound weight reduction and they were already faster, and the new Prather build MX-5s are just crazy fast. Oh well given how much Mazda throws at SCCA I guess they get their way.
James A Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Well, the Eagle's Canyon record was lowered by almost 2 seconds on Sunday, it is now 1:58.855 for a Caterham.
CarMan Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I guess I need about 3 seconds to get the lap at Lime Rock. But I'll chip away at it George
Kitcat Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 James A: Very impressive! It's hard enough to cut 1/10th of a second, so 2 seconds is great. Are car/driver doing the Runoffs this year?
James A Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Well it was my son who lowered the record not me, I don't have that speed. It's amazing he set such a fast time as it was 100+ degrees F all weekend and the pavement at Eagle's Canyon has gotten so rough the cars was skating to the outside of every turn, I mean just bouncing to the outside. So bad corner workers were calling it in, couldn't compensate with shock settings so we lived with it. Almost everyone was having difficulty with the rough surface. No run-offs this year as the silly SCCA puts the run-offs right at the beginning of the school year/College year! This will be his freshman year at college so it's not a good year for the run-offs. And, having the run-offs at Road America is not good for Caterham's too high speed, and what organization thinks the weather will be decent in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin that time of year? But, having said this rain would be a real advantage for us, the kid loves wet races, loves them!
