Is there a no-brainer way to wire in a 12V power socket?

Hi twobone,

One lead (+) to positive side of battery, the other lead (-) to any ground point.

Make sure you have a fuse between the outlet and the battery on the positive lead.

This sill also give you power when the ignition is off so be careful you do not drain your battery. Hope this helps.

I installed a 12v socket on top of the transmission hump in front of the shift lever for the same purpose. I ran a two lead wire (Battery-Tender type) directly to the battery, this can then power the GPS or its a simple connection for the battery tender when stored.

If you remove the cover from inside the car it is a straight shot forward to run the wire to the battery.

Don't forget to get a wire gauge large enough to handle whatever you'll be plugging in. I've ran a heated jacket, gps and a phone charger off of mine. Croc did the previous install. I plan on upgrading the power wire to a larger gauge so I can charge my booster pack thru it.

Here is quick tutorial on installing a power socket in a Caterham:

I had two under-dash sockets installed in my Seven, and one under the bonnet in case I need to plug in a12v trouble light.

My sockets are all surface-mount Sutars sockets, attached to a horizontal panel I fabricated under the dash -- so no space on the dash need to be taken up. See:

The Sutars are available in the US from marine suppliers; can't recall exactly where I got mine, some place in Florida.

Fuse ? Are you kidding, this is an english car with Lucas styled electrical. The fuse is totally unnecessary :jester:.

Just think about how your car is wired............. power goes to the switch via a wire, then back over to the fuse block via a wire, then to a fuse, then to the load. The only thing that can start a fire faster is a Bic lighter.

Guys thanks for this information on the Sutars "flush mount" sockets. I got a socket over a year ago, and can't bring myself to drill a 1 1/8 inch hole anywhere in my Cat!
