Painting a 7

Recommended Posts

Shop quotes can vary quite a bit depending on how much prep work is required as well as how fine a finish you want after.

In my case I painted mine myself in a throw away home made plastic booth and it cost me about $250 all told for a single stage paint and materials.

Hit a few shops for some estimates, they are simple to paint because of their small size.

Hi all

New to the whole 7 world and was wondering if its practical (from a cost/time perspective) to paint a 7 a completely new color. Is it a few $1000, $5000, etc?

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

Do you want interior and exterior of the parts painted? If so, that will add to your costs. Typical, one color, base clear, exterior only (car was brought in as a whole), the last one I did was $1,500. If we had to disassemble, add another $400-$600 depending on the age of what we are working with.

I want a an excellent paint job with it looking just as if it had ordered at the Caterham shop (or if that is normally crappy.. better than that :-)).

Thanks a bunch for your feedback. I'm happy to hear not $5000.

Not $5,000, but $2,500-$3,500 depending on who disassembles for paint.

I went to a local shop that has experience with Corvettes, i.e. fiberglass patching and prepping. For all 4 wings and the nosecone (disassembled) I paid $850, but this is L.A. and probably a bit more expensive. The paint job quality was excellent but for regular paint/clearcoat, not metal effect or other exotic stuff.

I have contemplated PlastiDip'ing the whole car. You can do the car yourself for $300. It seems that paint really takes a beating on these cars, and the soft durable coating has worked well for me on numerous other projects. Only problem with it, is that it is somewhat trendy right now.
