They look like the lowest point on the car other than the cooling fins on the transmission. I imagine when the rear end squats (during accel or from bumps) it could be easy for the floor to become the low point.

My car is set up on the higher of the road suspension settings to give more clearance given the atrocious quality of the roads in NJ. It must have worked as I have never bottomed out on the sump or floor. However, when I had Jeffs in the car for a test drive I managed to bottom out the fins on the diffuser. That was a particularly nasty "yump" that I should have slowed down further for given I had two people in the car.
