steering wheels

Greetings again! My birkin s3 has a 280mm round momo steering wheel on a quick release, using the momo 6 bolt adapter.

 

I can't see the guages.

 

If I go bigger diameter and look through the wheel to see the guages, even with the quick release to get in and out, I don't think I'd fit under the wheel.

 

I'm thinking about an open top D-shaped (formula style) steering wheel. If I stay momo, I'm thinking the model 12 cut top, like this:

Its 250mm wide x 165mm high. I would eliminate the momo 6 bolt adapter and drill the new wheel to fit my 3-bolt quick release.

 

OMP makes nearly the same wheel, they call it the Indy Open.

 

I "think" this type of wheel would have the benefit of being smaller, closer to the dashboard, and with the open top would reduce if not eliminate my sightline problem.

 

Thoughts on this? Anyone tried this wheel? Are there other wheels available that aren't $250? Are there other solutions to the sightline problem?

 

Disclaimer - Yes, I know. This steering wheel is likely not in compliance with all (any?) DOT requirements.

I can't see the much of the speedo and tach either, but the shape, size, and position of the steering wheel was ok.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of the absent segment of these "track" style wheels. I looked at them and had visions of grabbing a "handful of air" whilst trying to catch a tank slapper. Plus I don't think my steering rack is quick enough for me to hold the wheel constantly at 9 and 3.

I added programable, sequential shift lights to the scuttle and an electronic remote speedo by SPA design just to the right of the steering wheel.

Sometimes I also use a Garmin Fortrex 200 GPS widget that has a Speedometer page with good sized numerals, that I stick to the bottom steering wheel spoke with the extra grippy velcro.

I have a 280mm MOMO wheel that is 2.25" from the closest part of the dash. This gives enough room for my fingers in gloves to clear the toggle switches. I don't have a problem seeing my tach and speedo. If I were a taller person my viewing angle would cutoff my view of the top part of the gages. Any way to sit lower in the car?

Also, this may help much since mine is a Caterham.

I have the open top Momo wheel and like it. I can see the gauges fine and don't have an issue with the size. It gave me the added benefit of some extra knee room. You can get them a bit cheaper than $250 at somewhere like OG Racing.

 

Do you happen to have any pictures, showing it in place?

 

You're right on the price, seems like the best price is about $230...

 

 

Any way to sit lower in the car?

 

Not likely, I've shaved every 1/4" out of it to allow me to clear the roof (not that I use it much). As it is, my sightline is right at the top the windscreen frame...

I love mine, I've never had any issues with grabbing air during frantic course corrections and apart from the odd tight parking maneuver I never need to change the “10 to 2” driving position. Technically it wasn't legal for the old NJ inspection but it's the only way I can see the gauges on my S3 (see photo which was taken from about my eye position).
