Making your own carbon parts: hood and fenders

Recommended Posts

I messed around last summer with some carbon fiber to make a dash and I ended up with my whole car carbon. I thought some people may be interested in how to do it as a hobby. The fenders weigh 4oz each and the hood is 5lbs! The good is very flexable and is easily breakable it has held up for a few months though so far. I made a carbon pedal box cover too that helps distract people from my wiring disaster ;) the hood can use some more sanding but doesn't look bad for home made.

What is the weight of the original hood?

I'm impressed and would like to know more about the process. Would love to make some interior pieces on my car.

Did you just use the stock hood/fenders as a mold and overlay? Making a female mold and vacuum bagging would be a lot of work but its going to allow continual reuse if you intend to make more or want to do any modifications to the shape of the final product like formed in strengthening ridges, louvers etc. Really nice work.
