Has anyone had any experience replacing regular gear lube with synthetic?; Same weight of course. I did and now I can't get the shifter to cross over to the 3-4 side of the pattern. After pumping out and refilling, the car sat for about three months while I had the master cylinder repaired. ultraslow

Thanks for the input. The Lucas unit looks v-promising. I will keep you posted. Ultraslow

I have an '85 Caterham S3, solid axle, 4 spd, 1600 Xflow Kent. I wonder, does anyone have any information regarding where the brake master cylinders for this model came from? I have found dual circuit cylinders( front discs split lines, rear drums single line ) that look similar on eBay UK; They were from '70-early 80's MGB/MGBGT and TR7/TR8s. Mine is currently at White Post and they are lost at sea and seem to be having altogether too much trouble finding replacement seals. Any help gratefully received. ultraslow

jlumba81, This site is amazing. I will look into sizes tomorrow and let you know the out come. I had wondered about a scenario involving the MC but had nothing to hand my guess on. Thanks again Talk with you later ultraslow

Hello, About two weeks ago my Seven S3 developed a soft brake pedal. I had to pump to get pressure up and then after a bit, the pedal went soft again. Now it requires lots of pumping. :banghead:I have bled the brakes three times, front and rear. There are no leaks of brake fluid to be found, no loose fittings, and there was no air apparent when the brakes were bled. I haven't a clue what is going on. It's as of there is a volume that is expanding and filling when I push in the pedal. Anyone had a similar experience? Help!!!

Don't forget those filler ports in gas stations. I cracked a new Redline wet sump on the first drive with it. Fab-ed my own guard out of 0.125 Al plate, 2in Al angle, strips of rubber exhaust hanger as isolation, and connected it to front chassis tube and rear trans/engine bolts. Can sent pics if interested. ultraslow ultraslow@gmail.com

I am curious about how this would match up with my kent 1600 with a RedLine sump. Your guard does not extend v-far beyond the front edge of the sump. I envision basically the same thing, attached on that same frame tube, but extending along and just beyond the rear of the sump and attaching there via the two lower bell housing bolts. A sheet of 0.125 Al sheet 7+in wide and 24in long. There will be a 1.5 in tall,90 lip bent up at the rear to accommodate the slots for the bell-bolts. Now, my sump is not flat, it slopes down from the front toward the rear, the lowest part. I feel that I need protection there too. What do you think? ultraslow

I agree with KitCat. The seven is a one-of-a-kind, and for a variety of reasons, not suited for winter driving; regardless os which variant you choose. However, here is a site that gives a basic overview of some of the variations on the theme. http://www.kitcarlist.com/lotus7.html ultraslow S3 Caterham 7 solid axle 4 spd

Done , and done, and done again,... Sump change finished. Raised the ride height one inch all around; need to raise the rear the cannonic +15mm more to set balance. I have read about ride height settings. 150mm front, 165mm rear. What is the reference point for this measurement?? Redline sump does give lots more ground clearance. Ready to rock and the weather is perfect. BLAT! ultraslow

I want to apologize to Redline. It appears that thery did indeed send the correct pickup tube. Question, Tikijose, Did you loosen the motor mounts to shift the engine forward so as to get the dust guard out? Or what? I would dearly love not have to pull the engine; I mean it's real and it's fun but it isn't real fun. ulreaslow

Well, getting the pan off was one thing, however, getting it back on with the engine in place is a different thing. Must be making sacrifices to the wrong pagan gods. I am going to have to pull the engine. . Am going to try the Right Stuff route as the rubber front/rear seals do indeed fall out all to easily. Will keep you posted. Oh, Redline sent me the wrong oil pickup tube and are now standing mute to my requests as to the availability of the "correct" one. I will most likely have to cut and braze the one I have. Bummer! Ah yes, The English; 1950's technology and they are working half-days to catch up. I do love this car. Weather is great and it is up on stands. We shall see ultraslow

Dave and Bruce, I was indeed able to get at the offending back bolts on the pan via the tender under belly, between the engine and the bell housing. Many manual contortions and much cussing accompanied the effort. Now to fab a new oil pickup if Redline doesn't carry one for this pan. Thank you both again. Steve=ultraslow

Bruce, It is a higher clearance pan I bought from Redline UK. ultraslow

I have a four speed but I will look and see if there is access via this route. Thanks ultraslow

I have an unmodified kent 1600 in my S3. I want to change to a sump with more ground clearance. Is there any trick, short of pulling the engine for accessing the two rear bolts that hold the oil pan on? The bolts are under the bell housing. Help please!

Wayne, Sorry it took me so long to respond. I contacted Caterham in UK and they said the ROB for the long chassis will not fit my chassis. Quoting them " To be honest Steve we have had these in the past and had fitment problems, so I think the only option is to get the car/chassis to us and then have one made (will obviously take a while though)" I just love the way they talk. Anyway, it won't fit. Thank you anyway. Good luck selling it. Steve
