  1. Man thanks. The sodium based additive looks promising. As far as tetra-ethyl lead goes, It is a very nasty and very toxic chemical and I hadn't considered it. Thanks again. ultraslow
  2. Coffee Break, Oh, it started running like a Farmall tractor. One of the cylinders is at 75, another is a bit low and others are 120-ish compression. Plugs fouled like crazy on the low cylinders. Runs fine with new plugs: for about 100miles. It's kind of tedious and expensive that way though.
  3. The Kent is a 1967,1.6l, that was rebuilt when it was installed into what may be an older, reclothed, chassis. I won't know about hardened seats until we get the head off; I'm guessing not. The title states that the car is a 1985 kit assembled in FL. It has had several owners and I cannot know what they burned. When I bought it about three years ago, it had 9200miles on it. I have added about 5k more. I use unleaded and inconsistently used a lead fuel additive until late last year.(OOPS?) Ran great until last Fall. Any suggestions as to brands? RedLine Substitute Lead Additive? Octane boosters? Thanks for the reply ultraslow
  4. I am currently having head repairs done on my 1.6l Kent. ; Burned/eroded valve seats. What are the recommended lead fuel additives to help with this problem in the future? Other fixes? I am forced, like all US drivers, to consistently run unleaded fuel. Ultraslow
  5. Face? Oh, yeah.
  6. Try Dave Bean Engineering in CA. 209-754-5802. All things Lotus and Caterham. Give them a try, nice folks.
  7. I have trouble with a supercharged 6cyl being referred to as a 1959 replica.
  8. Problem solved, Bent motor mount, don't ask. Shifted mo=tor over and the pinion was missing the ring. Bizarre but true, Thanks for the input. I'd rather be lucky that good.
  9. The pinion is being thrown out far enough. I have put clay on the pinion and the solenoid is indeed working as it should. The mount on the bell housing is okay. no changes there also. I have an eleven tooth pinion. The diameter and height are correct. Ken Grey at Dave Bean has been working on this with me for at least two months and we ar both lost.
  10. I own, am owned by?, a 1985 S3 with a 1.6l Xflow and 4spd. Recently my old Lucas starter quit.(it is a 25356A and it drives a 135 tooth ring gear) I sent it to a shop in CA to be rebuilt and upon it's return , the pinion no longer makes contact with the ring gear!!! The shop disavows any change of the pinion gear. My friends at Dave Bean actually measured all the starter pinions in their stock and they are the same diameter as the one I now have. I need a larger diameter pinion gear. Inexact measurements, at this point, say that 3/8 in larger on the radius could do thee trick. Has anyone heard of a larger diameter starter pinion gear? I am desperate as the weather is great and I am stuck driving my Honda Insight.
  11. cheap racer, I was a bit too quick with my post. First it looks like a beautifullySecondly, executed design and it will indeed allow more to experience a seven-like car. I am sorry if I offended anyone and applaud your efforts.Times change and our views may need to change with them. ultraslow
  12. I do not mean to be negative. Hoever, just as thong underwear and lycra tights are not for every body type, perhaps the Super 7 is not for all sizes of people who want one. Why don't some buy a Z4 or something that can more easily accommodate them without adulterating the basic nature of what was meant to be a "small nimble car"? Cup Holders? ultraslow
  13. Dingo, Just a few minutes which leads me to believe that the "heat" issue may be a misdirection. This may be fuel related. Perhaps the leak is as mentioned above is a crack and not the gasket, I will change anyway when I pull them. So again, misfire develops, engine slowly dies. I wait, checking everything in sight, and bingo it starts. Short trips are fine. Over five min or so and it reappears. Also, coincidentally? starter has quit, solenoid has been sticking. Unrelated? Ultraslow
  14. Fuel leak was on rear dual. Seemed to be the gasket. Perhaps not. The engine slowly cutting out is confusing, also the waiting and then restarting.?? Crack or gasket leak and marginally low fuel pump pressure. I will pull the rear carb and look. Also will look at linkage for misalignments or breakage. Will let you know. Thanks for the support. ultraslow
  15. Breaker points? Could be the dwell , at higher rpm's. Ultraslow
  16. Encountered, a nasty misfire yesterday, Checked the usual suspects. Found a fuel leak on rear carbs. Replaced stop nuts. Checked and recheck, no leak on short hops; Started home, it resurfaced. Rechecked dissy position again, wires. fuel leak, has new coil. Problem disappeared after cool down only to resurface a short time later, engine cuts out. It is v-quiet w/o the engine noise. Heat related? Going replace both carb to intake gaskets. W/leak is fuel pressure/regulator too low. Any thoughts? Ultraslow
  17. Check to see if plug leads to dizzy are in correct pews and that rotor is oriented correctly. Both this caught me out. ultraslow
  18. Did he same thing on first drive. 1.5 in ground clearance and gasoline filler cap at station; knocked a hole in stock sump. Unwittingly drove it home, then tried to go back into town. Motor died, then I noticed the oil pressure at zero. Towed it home, patched sump with gas tank patch, refilled, No knocks, pressure fine, I bought a lottery ticket since I had just dodged a bullet. Those Kents are tough. Old as the hills (mine is a rebuilt '67) Apparently left behind by Druids when they departed the pattern. It has been two years since. I know I was very very lucky, maybe you are too? Just my story. Bought a more shallow wet sump from Redline soon after also raised ride height to 3.5in. Good luck. YMMV ultraslow
  19. Thanks to rx7LOCOST and The Stig. address on the way Ultraslow
  20. Is there any source that details, hopefully with pictures, the details and installation of a Non-FIA rollbar? I have a S3 live axle. Caterham does not sell the S3/live axle version anymore. I want to have one fabbed but I have not seen another Seven on the road in Northern New Mexico so as to see how they are shaped or how they attached the bar to the shock towers. Also, does anybody know of a shop in the ABQ-SF New Mexico area that could fab a bar for me? I tried Red Mountain in the UK but they were having trouble with their suppliers. I really like them, But,... However, before I can think about having tube bent, I need to see one in the flesh. I can MIG/TIG it up if needed. All help gladly appreciated. ultraslow
  21. I have contacted Seven Speed and they seem to be willing to take on the task. I will keep you posted. I shall also look into l-s-d in UK and see what that looks like. Thanks for the info ultraslow
  22. See the above post, "Interesting problem solved" Thanks for the input. Sorry I am so slow in responding; been out driving! ultraslow
  23. Does anyone know if Soft Bits for Sevens has gone tango-uniform? I placed an order a week and a half ago and since the initial notice of receiving it, I have heard nothing. The phones are constantly busy and I get no response to my emails. I need a new tonneau and if they are gone, I will look elsewhere. They were so good though. I hope the business is still operating.Any word? Anybody? ultraslow
  24. Problem solved, Thanks all. ultraslow.
  25. My '85 S3, 4spd, solid axle developed an interesting problem after I changed the transmission oil a few months ago. After the fluid change it sat for three months while I waited for White Post to repair my master cylinder. When I finally got to get back out for a blat, I couldn't get the linkage to cross neutral. I could access Rev, 1st and 2nd but it wouldn't make the trip through neutral into 3rd and 4th. Much confusion ensued. Noticed that the linkage worked with the cover off and went from there. :drool:The problem was a very slight difference in thickness of the cover plate on the top of the trans under the breather hole. When replacing the plate after the fluid change the plate got turned 180, there didn't seem to be any diff to me. However, there was just enough interference between the tacked on baffle for the breather and the shifter fork to prevent the linkage making the trip across the H. Live and learn. Hope this helps someone out. BTW, The folks at Dave Bean, Ken esp, were of great help in assisting me in chasing down the problem. ultraslow
