  1. I know staggeringly little about how the internet actually works ( )

but my impression is that slow-to-load websites tend to have too much data on the 'top' page.

A site I visit often (www.apexspeed.com/forums) has an option on each level for user-selection of how many of the previous days postings it will display on initial request, which again I believe affects the speed of displaying on my computer.

(I explained badly, go see what I mean...)

    cheers

It's entirely possible the forum software is poorly written, but given the size of our forum, I doubt it. Also, the General section (the page that lists the topics, is just over 200 KB when downloaded, so it's pretty small). When I get the new site up, I will post a link here for direct side by side comparisons. That will tell us for sure.

The problem we have is that we are not big enough for dedicated hosting (our own web servers). So we are on a shared box with possibly hundreds of other applications, so it depends on how responsible (or irresponsible) our hosting provider is about making sure the sites don't slow down.

    Stay tuned....

  2. When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive.

I took her to a gas station.

And that's how the fight started....

    **************************************** **********

I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95.

Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95.

I told her the beer would make her look better at night than the cold cream.

And that's how the fight started...

    **************************************** **********

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.

The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age.

I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.

I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.

The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too'.

And that's how the fight started.....

**************************************** ********** My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend.

I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

'My Gosh!' says my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

And that's how the fight started.....

    **************************************** ********** I rear-ended a car this morning.

So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car.

You know how sometimes you just get so stressed and little things just seem funny?

Yeah, well I couldn't believe it.... he was a DWARF!!!

He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!!!'

So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?'

And that's how the fight started.....

    **************************************** **********

I took my wife to a restaurant.

The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.

'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.'

He said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?'

'Nah, she can order for herself.'

And that's how the fight started.....

  3. I know sometimes it takes a long time to load for me, and Skip has mentioned that a few times too.

I'm looking at another hosting provider since our contract is up in December. I'll let you guys know how it goes...

anyone else have speed issues with the site in general?

Kevin, I'm up for this if the sun is out and roads are dry.

I still have to put sides on my car .

As I had indicated in the Cumberland Autox thread, wifey is working and I'll have to secure babysitting. I think my nephew will watch the kids and meet us at Half Price burgers, and then he'll drive the car in the afternoon with you guys on the way back.

  5. I liked the earlier version of the Clubman better. They are pretty heavy but visually pleasing.

    I'd have to agree :yesnod:

  6. Mazda,

Brakes only slow you down :D If you change you mind let us know. A weekend of autocrossing would definitely take your mind off of all the startup related challenges. Besides, it's going to be a long winter as the events start winding down.

I usually bring my son and my wife counts the weekend as quality father/son bonding time;)

I would totally bring my 9 year old.

If I bring my 6 year old, a lot of competitors might end up with flat tires though.

  7. Mazda,

Is it a company you started or a clients, just interested. What is the product line or service?

I'm a minority shareholder, one of the starters, and the CTO. We do speech to text conversions, mainly for voice mails at this point. So, you would get your voice mails as text emails, which allows you to store them, sort them, search them, etc...

We also are tying our technology to Voice XML platforms (typical automated answering systems you get at banks, airlines, etc...).

  9. I think my wife is working both days that weekend :(

Just NOW, like 2 minutes ago, I took the car for a spin to see if putting a residual pressure valve in my front brakes solved my weak brake problem. It did. but I'm still not confident enough in the car to bring it out. It's basically been sitting for the last 5 weeks.

I have my hands full right now trying to save a startup company I've been working on for over a year. Other than having a hard time raising capital and getting new customers, things are going great  :banghead:
