Quick Release Hub / Wheel

My car is finally on the truck and headed East, it's new home will be ready just in time. My last 7 had the removable Momo wheel and I'm thinking I'll want to put one in this one (it currently had the standard wheel).

Have many of you done this with either the "standard" approach replacing the column or with an aftermarket adaptor? Pros and cons of each?

unchris,

I used a splined adapter (see photo) and hub such as the one below. The splined coupler is crossdrilled and attached to the steering shaft with heavy duty steel coil spring pins (similar to roll pins and available from McMaster-Carr: https://www.mcmaster.com/#roll-pins/=1c3i813). This setup has served my car since 2006. You’ll bend the steering wheel before you shear a pin. In the second photo, you can see one of the pins holding the coupler on the shaft. The advantage of pinning vs. welding; if you ever need to remove the coupler from the shaft, easily done by knocking out the pins.

Thanks Mike, do you recall where you got the spline/adaptor?

If I understand correctly you're saying you drill through the column and the shaft on the coupler then insert the pins you linked to, correct? Multiple pins I assume?

I used two pins (positioned 90 degrees from each other; one at the front of the coupler and one at the rear). Drilled through the shaft aand coupler only, not the column. If you have a column, that should be fixed to the car (holds the shaft in place). It will depend on your setup as to what you need to drill, if you go this route. I no longer have an actual column in my car, only the steering shaft which is threaded through spherical bearings...but that’s whole other discussion. Don’t want to muddy the waters. :)

As as for the brand of adapter, I don’t recall, but it was for a Grant steering wheel. As for what you need, this will require a hub with the proper bolt pattern for the wheel you use as well as a coupler designed for the correct shaft diameter. I’d start with the shaft diameter and go from there.

Its ok Chris, apology accepted - On a forum like this it is hard to see that I am the good looking one! :jester:

For a Caterham you can buy a splined upper steering column with the correct momo wheel that connects right onto the lower steering column. That would be you easiest option - nicely plug and play.

Personally I have never bothered about a removable wheel. I am slim and fit enough that I fit easily behind the wheel when climbing in. :leaving:

do you know if the Caterham one is available in the US? I didn’t call but not of the Caterham dealers seem to maintain pets sections on their sites.

In in all honesty I’m distracting myself while the car is on its way, there are many things I’m researching that I think I’ll probably want to do but I’ve yet to sit in an SV to confirm.

Another distraction is the signal switch, I’ve keen reading about a motorcycle using called the Moro-X which is a kind of allnin one fuse box controller. It provides momentary switch control fornsignals and lights as well as keyless ignition by recognizing your phone via Bluetooth. Still looking in traffic compatibility - and waiting to see if the indicator switch is as archaic as I remember!

Pets can be dangerous.

I think this is the upper steering column you want

https://caterhamparts.co.uk/columns/127-quick-release-steering-boss-and-column.html?search_query=steering+column&results=83

Your existing wheel may just bolt on - you may need a new steering wheel and column connector though.

I suggest you wait until your car arrives then once you have a visual on the car, give Caterham Parts in the UK a call, talk through what you want to do and they will help you order what you need. They will send it pretty quick. The other US dealer with spares is Bruce Beachman in PNW. No website - just call him. I like the old fashioned approach.

This is the Caterham solution. You can still pull out your upper steering column and attach the adapter like Shane did above. All the bits are here to achieve the result Caterham did.
