Correct idle setting for a 1996 supersprint

Recommended Posts

I am a proud new owner of a 1996 1700 Supersprint. The idle seems low hence a possible low oil pressure reading at idle.

What is the correct idle rpm setting? The engine is a 1700 Supersprint with 11k on the odo and runs real good. The idle seems to be set at around 750 and the oil pressure gauge will drop sometimes into the red at low idle. When driving the pressure is good. I know about the sketchy accuracy of the sending units and gauges but the idle seems too low to me. Also, with a wet sump what is the recommended oil filter and oil grade?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill - welcome to Seven’s ownership and the wonders of the Crossflow. :)

You probably have either a 233 or 244 cam, both of which I think result in an idle more around 1000 rpm or so. I have the 244 and my idle is usually around there.

I just use Fram filter PH3614. Any equivalent should also fit.

I use natural Valvoline VR-1 High Zinc Racing oil, 20w-50. It’s obviously on the heavy side, but lots out there about how pushrod engines like zinc.

Hope pe that helps. Enjoy!

Steve

Thanks so much for the reply! I originally thought around 1000 rpm would be about correct. Having owned Porsche cars and other vintage cars (Tigers, I have two) I am a believer in the good old Dino Valvoline VR1 oil as well. Being new to the Sevens I really appreciate all the great suggestions and posts from this group! I have learned a bunch. I am certain to be needing future advice. Ya'll are fantastic and I enjoy the forum!
