MHKflyer52 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Posted on the Locost_North_America site by Mark Rivera who built his car. This is a copy of his post to that site. "Boy, was yesterday ever bittersweet. I was having a tremendous time on track, eating up cars like nobody's business. Then, at about 130 on the back straight, I went for the brakes, and the pedal went "POP" and straight to the floor. The pivot bolt on the floor mount came out. I'm not proud to say this could have been prevented by using a locking nut instead of a nut and lock washer. I'm ok, a little banged up, but ok. Things could have gone much worse. The car did its job to protect me, and that's why I'm here and not in the hospital or dead. Not sure what I'll do next, have to get the car unloaded and see how extensive the damage is. Here's the video. Mark" From Martin Keller I am posting this to this site as I figure that this actually helps make our cars safer as it make us aware of things that might get overlooked from time to time. Check those pivot bolts for security before the next ride. I did and hope you due.
slngsht Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 he posted in the video section here. Could've been alot worse I guess.
Kitcat Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Wow, you really moved the tire wall and it did a fantastic job of absorbing the blow. I have no side protection on my 7 except for my left arm, do you have a cage?
R1 Seven Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Mark does have a cage on that car...the rearview mirror is mounted on the front top bar. You can also see a side bar in the rearview mirror about shoulder height. Hitting a tire wall sideways like that without the side bars could have resulted in some of the tires intruding into the cockpit and possibly making contact with the driver. Both the gravel trap and the tire wall really helped keep Mark safe in this crash. I was worried when I saw it fly throught he air that it was going to dig in and flip when it hit the gravel trap, but I guess the angle was still ok. Tire walls do a great job of dissapating energy, but really tear up stuff on the car.
xflow7 Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Oof. Glad he's okay. I hope the car is repairable. Mid Ohio is a really neat track, but the way China Beach falls away from the track there is pretty dicey; especially with the camber on the outside of that turn. No clearer demonstration than Pedro Lamy's flight in his Aston Martin last year (worth a search on youtube if you've never seen it).
slngsht Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 I was worried when I saw it fly throught he air that it was going to dig in and flip when it hit the gravel trap Me too... the angle of attack looked very close to digging in.
