Yup, spot on.  Imperial on the early cylinder, metric in the later.  I worked on Spitfires for many of my 35 years of wrenching.

I’ve never seen a master sold with untapped ports.  I’ve seen masters with adapters fitted though.

Ken at Dave Besn is a goid source for rebuild kits.

I'm actually considering fitting an early 80s Mazda RX7 drum brake MC.  I may have more new old stock availability.

They may be 7/8".

The rx7 may not have the same distance between the bolt holes. A half-inch thick aluminum adapter with threaded holes for studs could be used to adapt a standard pattern mc without any mod to the cat mount but the end of the mc might contact the column body.

 

Moss sells a $15 rebuild kit for the mk4 spitfire mc but lists it as a 1/2 inch bore.

The holes on the rx7 cylinder were close enough to the "standard" 2.25" that I only had to ream them a bit

I forget if I did the cylinder, or the mount, but it wasn't a big deal

Just called Ken earlier today and have a rebuild kit on the way along with a new master cylinder from eBay.  I figure I would swap it out for the new MC and rebuild the old one as a backup.

I noticed the .5 inch bore as well.  I think that's a misprint as everywhere else it says it's .7 inch.

IamScotticus, 7Westfield and MV8, I will be checking out the RX7 MC as well just in case the new MC I ordered from eBay doesn't pan out.  Thank you for your input!

If you are rebuilding your cylinder, examine it carefully.  Take it apart, clean it up and then inspect the bore with a bright light and a magnifier.  Light markings you may be able to hone out.  Heavy scoring or pitting cannot be honed out.  You need to either have the cylinder sleeved or replace it.

 

You decided to hone it?  Ok, when you are done, put the piston back in.  Loose and floppy?  The cylinder is pooched.

 

Myself?  I’ll rebuild disc brake calipers but I only replace master cylinders and drum brake slave cylinders.  Seen too many “rebuilt” ones fail — and that includes professionally done ones and sleeved ones.  YMMV

The only car I have been able to ascertain that it was OEM on was a Morgan from 77-93.  I have spent hours trying to find information on this particular MC to practically no avail.  It's almost like it was a Girling secret.

 

What makes it even more difficult is, I believe, Girling was sold to Lockheed at some point and then it was sold to TRW.

Well, as for rebuilding brakes, it's like carbs.  You can spend, or invest, your time and energy doing the work going through the learning, or just buy the NOS or rebuilds and go straight to bolting on.  If anything,  learn to build lines and pressure bleed.  You won't save $ on the rebuilding of the components, but on the assembly and bleeding labor, and eliminating many errors.

 

Not the same equation for the guy who is servicing customers cars.  If he has the skills and tools to gain a little more profit margin by rebuilding,  he should.

Thankfully MV8 posted the eBay link for buying a new MC that appears to fit.  I have no idea how this seller was able to obtain them as I do not think it's a Chinese copy of this particular Girling MC though I cannot swear to it.

I was curious about the black coating.  Not familiar with the Morgan marque all that much.

The black is probably anodizing.

In the cars for sale listing, there is a rotary powered cat that has the sloped reservoir mk4 spitifire master cyl with the level visible. Looks adequate as long as it's checked/kept topped off.

My pre-lit also came with the mk4 spit cylinder

the reservoir started leaking, so I converted it to a remote res

then, later, I went to the mazda unit

I was never happy with pedal feel with the spit unit    Mazda unit is better, but still not perfect
