Should I?

Here's a picture of mine. I am not sure it does much - above 60 mph, the wind buffeting is pretty intense. I am going to look into getting a larger one made.

After driving the car today, I'm sure that screen actually does ALOT.

First impressions... the wind actually is not that bad. The most noticeable thing is the strain on your neck - i'm sure I'll notice that by the time I get to snowshoe. The positive is that the footwell is MUCH cooler. Almost feels nice. Before, it would get SO HOT that I literally could not hold my foot on the gas with sandels.

Regarding your aero screen, if I just put my hand on the cowl in front of the steering, I feel a difference in amount of air force on my head. But putting the hand there makes the flow much more turbulent, which is annoying. I'm thinking a pod like shape like the ultralite might be the way to go.

Sorry, but just to throw a little cold water on things.

I was very near to swapping my windscreen for an aeroscreen about 2.5 years ago. As it happens, I had a collision with a dear that summer (still with windscreen) on the expressway in Indianapolis (some of you from the USA Sevens mailing list may remember). While I was lucky on many counts escaping uninjured, I am utterly convinced that the windscreen, small as it is, saved me from very serious injuries. It bore a significant impact by some part of the animal and, while obviously destroyed, I believe succeeded in deflecting what would instead have likely destroyed my head.

After that experience, I if I ever do fit aeros, it will be exclusively for track/auto-x events, or very short blats.

Edit: I don't really mean this as a "you shouldn't." I just never really entertained the notion that I would have such an accident in the 2000 miles a year I drove my car, let alone on the expressway. So it's more just to show that it pays to consider these sorts of things, however unlikely they may seem.

heh, neat trick. That's because I secretly want my car to be like his.

I should take a pic of my Buick. When you click on it, you'll see it's really a Rolls

I'll have to look into that after the Snowshoe blat.

This winter the car is getting a full roll cage, so this will be a one time deal.

BTW, your pic is password protected.

Hmmm, should have come up with an option to proceed without signing in. no matter, though.

Ironic you should bring this up - I was just thinking about it yesterday as I was traveling back roads that are farm land and woods. The whole Cristiano da Matta accident was playing through my mind. We are certainly better protected than a motorcycle, but without a windshield it leaves the head and neck exposed. Despite being open back roads, I still drive pretty slow.

JBH...if you are considering a new aero, check out the one made by "Richard in France".

Richard in France's Carbon Bits

It's in the "interchangeable style" which wraps down the sides more, and bolts in using the holes for the regular windshield stanchions.

I'm pretty sure that RiF's was designed to give MORE protection than the standard Caterham issue one (regardless of material)...it comes up a bit higher or has a different curve.

From a pistonheads thread:

"it is much deeper than the Caterham one and deflects the air better according to users."

Pistonheads aeroscreen thread

And while you're at it, check out RiF's all carbon car...kind of a dark alter ego to Sugino's...

JBH...I notice that your center mirror is a bit of jerry-rig (IMHO)...looks like they took a normal windshield one and flipped the adhesive mount down. Check out the Spa stalk mount center mirror when you have a sec...Pegasus has them or Caterham. Note that you'll have to drill into your scuttle if you DON'T use the "interchangeable" deflector, which snaps to the two bosses on your scuttle right now....you then mount the mirror to the deflector.

I think the problem I have when considering alternative aeroscreens is the lack of interchangeability. For example, I can not interchange to a windscreen (like I think you can) without drilling new holes and plugging the old ones.
