Speed + Wind = Seven. What is your comfort range?

With no sidescreens or top, and only sunglasses, ear plugs and a hat (if it will stay on your head): How fast can you Comfortably cruise on the highway or a nice deserted back road? (let's pretend that we all live in a state with no speed limits)

I'll start;

up to 130 kph (80mph) I can cruise comfortably- the RPM is at 3100, 0 psi boost, hair blowing in the breeze- forget wearing a hat- it would be long gone already.

140-160 kph things start to get uncomfortable- seat belt ends flap you in the face, glasses start to float off your head.

160+ forget comfort- As you are focusing on the road whatever glasses you try to wear float off your face and whatever you have resting in the co-driver seat starts to float- like magic (I am not exagerating about this)

Is this similar in all LSIS's?

No, it's not similar. You have those two nice little humps in the hood in front of you, which we don't have - that's something I plan to try. I'd say with no windscreen of any kind, up to 50 it's comfy and cool. 70 is tolerable, past that, I'd rather wear a helmet.

We're talking about road in Germany here of course... 80(mph) is comfortable with screen and side screens, over that and you have to hang on to your hat. 100 plus is OK for short spurts, but you need a hat that secures under your chin (or a helmet) and some kind of ear protection probably, and it helps if you tuck the belt straps back through the shoulder belts.

My car is equipped with aeroscreen and half doors but your figures sound reasonable for me. I've driven my car at topspeed (215 kph / 135 mph) wearing only aviator goggles but this is an exercise in masochism. Every fly hurts and you don't want to think about overtaken trucks throwing small stones at your face (let alone bigger ones).

A friend who must have been there with Steve in Germany told me that he is comfortable up to about 80 mph in his Caterham without a top and wearing only goggles.

He can hit 100 for short bursts but sustained runs are not very comfortable. He's gone like 110 a few times and reports that the wind buffeting at that pace is quite bad.

These glasses stay on my head pretty good well over 100mph :D

Then you end up with racoon eyes tan lines! Actually I need some Rec Specs ...

My side doors are required for interstate drives of 55-60+ (mph). Hat stays on because of chin strap.

Ear plugs .. always!!

That Germany, sure is a big area! I had an original 427 Cobra, back in the day. At anything over 60 to 70 MPH the top, if used would start flaping up & down, W/O the side screens in it. The birkin won't do it at any speed, now if I could just get in it with the top up. Our area of Germany can get quite cool in the coming months, add rain to that & you need the roof. No longer hard core!

In the Ultralite ( no top, no sidecurtains) the half moon windscreens do a good job of keeping the wind out of your face. At 70 to 80 mph it is comfortable with just goggles (which I always wear because of occasional pebbles). Sometimes I wear a skullcap, as after a while, the buffeting makes my hair hurt. (It also helps with the sunburn, as I am "thin" on top")

I generally wear an earbud in my left ear, which is the audio from the radar detector, and on long trips , an earplug in the right ear. The passenger is offered earplugs, as the exhaust is on the passenger side.

I'm getting uncomfortable over 120km/h for long trips. I always wear earplugs. I have no side curtains or doors. I have a bikini top that reduces the wind a bit, and it's much nicer with four 13x10's with slicks strapped on the rear deck as it blocks more wind. GRIN

It's quite nice around 100km/h for me.
