jcham1157
Hi everyone, What I'm about to say may be blasphemy around these parts, but I put my name down on the waiting list (With a deposit) for a Caterham Seven kit some time in early 2023 to reserve a 2024 build spot and I'm no longer interested in getting the car. This is the problem with long wait times - between that time and now, we've had our first kid and I've already gotten rid of a couple two seaters in my collection because I have more fun driving an M5, for example, with my wife and kid, than I do driving by myself. It appears I have a build date scheduled for some time mid-summer 2024 here and I'm wondering, rather than cancelling and wasting my $5k deposit, has anyone seen someone sell their build spot in the past? I mean, there has to be someone else out there interested in getting one of these kits who doesn't want to wait and could basically buy my spot from me perhaps? Before early Feb here I'll need to put down the next $10k deposit and the balance would be due upon completion. I can't tell if the best bet would be to try to sell the spot now (If that's even possible) or to just complete the process and then sell the kit when it's here. The latter is less than ideal for me for a number of reasons. My apologies - I'm editing here because I realize I didn't mention what spec this kit is - It is a 420R Edited January 10, 2024 by jcham1157
wdb
Tough spot! I hope you find someone. If there’s a waiting list there must be demand.
jcham1157
Could be worse - I mean, worst case scenario I end up with a Caterham Seven kit in my garage lol! Right now there's still time to change up some of the things I originally specified so it could be customized more to someone else's liking, but that needs to be signed, sealed, delivered by February. If anyone knows of someone who is dreaming of building one of these and doesn't want to wait till 2025 let me know!
IamScotticus
You can't strap a baby seat to the rollbar? Edited January 11, 2024 by IamScotticus
jcham1157
Oh, again I didn't clarify - the baby seat would just go in the passenger side. I'm just worried strapping my wife to the rollbar might upset the wonderful balance of the car too much... 1
jbcollier
Kids grow up, move out and never call. Wives run off with your best friends. You need something steady in your life. Get the Seven! :-) 2 1

IamScotticus
Life's too short to drive boring cars. Honestly, I understand if you got play money, it's your money. But there are plenty of good running 7s that come up for sale for half the price. You don't have to be seven-less.
speedwagon
life does change! Years ago I acquired a wife, 2 kids and then a third kid so my dreams of wining Indy went on the shelf. Then 10 years later the pendulum swung back, and am back off road racing with wife as co-driver and kids as the pit crew, and now as the twilight nears youngest daughter is patiently waiting to get the Superformance S1. Do what you need to do, and find some one to get a car sooner than they thought they could. and yes the kids did leave, and the second wife did run away with what I foolishly thought was a friend. PS sent the cowboy a valentine's day card thanking him.
slowdude
I had an M5 for 2 months, absolutely loved it and it's the definitive super sedan for families, but the caterham scratches the itch better. I couldn't drive the M5 without putting myself in speeding ticket land. Much rather have one functional car or SUV at the opposite end of the spectrum as the 7. If you have the space and money, why not something sensible and the caterham?
