Hello everyone,

I picked up my dream project car about two weeks ago and I’m hoping to learn as much as I can about it. I was given very limited information at the time of purchase, so any insight or background would be greatly appreciated.

According to the title, the car is a 2007 Brunton Super Stalker. It’s powered by a GM 3800 supercharged V6, paired with a T5 manual transmission, and uses a solid rear differential. The car has a South Carolina–issued VIN. At some point in its past, it was involved in a fire and later sold through a salvage auction. The previous owner replaced some of the damaged wiring and managed to get it running, albeit not particularly well.

Since bringing it home, I haven’t been able to drive it very far. The radiator and hoses wouldn’t hold water, so I replaced the radiator with a 1990s Honda aluminum unit, as I couldn’t find a Brunton-specific option. I’m still waiting on radiator hoses before I can fully test the cooling system.

While going through the wiring, I found an unplugged connector and realized the car was missing a MAP sensor. Combined with the fact that most of the vacuum lines were either disconnected or routed incorrectly, I’m fairly confident this is a major reason the engine runs so poorly. I have a MAP sensor on order, but while waiting, I shifted my focus to the bodywork.

When I bought the car, it had square LED headlights that didn’t fit the look at all, so I swapped them out for EMPI “buggy” headlights, which I think completely transformed the appearance of the car. I also gave it its first real cleaning since the fire. There was soot everywhere—some areas cleaned up easily, while others required oven cleaner. The side panel will still need additional work, likely with some form of abrasive.

After that, I removed the hood and began sanding away the fire-damaged fiberglass. In some spots the damage was worse than expected, but overall the panel appears salvageable. I cut out the worst areas and have started rebuilding the missing sections. Unfortunately, the driver’s side fender is essentially gone, and I’m currently weighing my options for repairing or replacing it.

I’m a college student on a limited budget, and this is my first time tackling many of these types of repairs, so I’m very open to feedback if there’s anything I’m doing wrong or could be doing better.

My goal for the car is to run SCCA autocross events and enjoy it on nice days. If anyone has information on the history of this specific car—or Brunton Super Stalkers in general—I would love to hear it. There don’t seem to be many of these cars out there, and information is pretty scarce.

I want to wish you the very best on your project and send encouragment.  Having picked up someone elses 'project' more than once and then made a go of it, I know how hard it is going to be.  One thing you should consider carefully is the need to replace the wiring harness.  Fires have a habit of giving them hidden damage.  Since you have to strip everything back, this is a good time to change it over.

 

The original owner was on USA7s albeit very low key.  I am having a mental blank on his profile name.  The car also appeared in the for sale section a few times - many in the long running classified ad post and there was a dedicated post from the owner trying to sell after the fire.  I do not have any easy way of finding that - search by stalker in that sub forum and go listing by listing - sorry.

 

As Bob @Anaximander mentioned on another page, there used to be a Brunton Stalker forum.  The best bit was the owners gallery of cars so you work out where a stalker was in its evolution by chassis number and track down prior owners.  Looks like its gone sadly.  Maybe its still on the wayback history site - Bob may remember its original name?

 

Bob also passed on Scott's contact.  He and his father are good guys.  Kit car building is a brutal business and there are bumps along the way, so not everyone will agree with me on that assessment.  The Mineheart family know how to drive.  A cheap air ticket to FL to see them autocross and chat between sessions will give you a world of ideas how to make Stalkers better and faster and learn how you need to drive it for its maximum potential.
