The car chassis was made in approximatly 2002, the engine is a x-flow type ford. The car is in a southern state, we are in summit county Ohio (emmissions county). what forms do i need? How do i get the car titled? liscensed? What flaming hoops of fire do i need to jump through? car wont do us much good if we cant drive it. anyone been through this that can help? Kitcat
When I registered my '97 Caterham in Ohio this summer it had a NJ title so it was quite easy-just a matter of a visual inspection and some paperwork. Go to Ohio's BMV site for info. You will need to trailer it to the BMV so it can be inspected or you can drive illegally there-I had temporary NJ plates so I just drove it there. Everyone loved it and came outside to look at it and share all their favorite car stories. Then they all stayed outside to hear how it sounded when I drove off. Some applauded! They were so dazzled that they didn't notice a huge typo we made in NJ where I bought the car: Seller certified it had 17K miles but it really only had 13K. So it looked like I had fiddled with the odometer-I was sweating bullets but they missed it completely, tho it was one of the things they had to check. Have car insurance or an insurance binder too. I expect it will be more complex for you as you have no title. My seller registered it in NJ as a '98 but with a '67 Pinto engine, to get around the NJ smog rues. Here in Cincy we have no smog rules or inspections so its not an issue. Apparently if you register as a "collector car" in Ohio that gets you around any smog requirements elsewhere in Ohio. Good luck!
Al N.
I would have the seller get it titled in his/her state...saves you one step/lots of potential hassle. I nearly had the dealer I bought from title it...but there was a 3% tax difference, so I did it in NJ.
manik
Agreed. Have the seller title the car before he sells it to you. Much easier for *you* to change an existing title, particularly if (we assume) you will not be receiving an MCO. tm
Mondo
From what I can find, in California, the car has to have at least 7500 miles to transfer registration from another state. Less than that and you have to meet current smog, I don't think you can do the SB100 on a used car either... which I guess leaves the option of putting it on jacks and runnnig to get past 7500miles
gjslutz
Robert, It could be worth the time to call Dick Brink at Texas Motor works as he has a few driving Birkins listed as 1967 Lotus. I'm not sure how they are tidled though. If you carry that through & get colector plates, it should end your problem. One county south of you there isn't an echeck requirement. (817) 461-7431 or (817) 233-4043. dick@texasmotorworks7.com I have never met him, but just purchased a spare tire mount from him.
