slngsht
the earliest Rotus still in existance. This weekend we (Arya and I) started disecting my Rotus. The car is now gutted (again ), and this time the center tunnel, rear section of the frame, pedal box and shelf are all gone. So after this round, the car is not really a Rotus anymore. I have to find a new name for it. I will post pics later, but after much hacking, the engine passenger compartment, and roll bar will move back in the car by about 4". The engine and tranny will also move up into the chassis about 4", which finally gets the oil pan in line with the lower frame tubes, allowing me to drop the ride height of the car (and center of gravity) significantly. The center tunnel will get narrower and taller in the back, allowing for more hip room, and slightly wider in the front to accept the bellhousing better. Also, the tunnel will now be fully triangulated at its front and back as it ties back to the rest of the chassis. The dash will be redone and tied in with the center tunnel. Dash will be narrower and slightly higher (due to higher hood line), Trunk tubes will be beefed up to make for a much stronger trunk area and support the rear members of the roll bar. Raising the engine within the chassis also allows frees access to exhaust ports, so we will make a set of long tube headers to free up some more ponies (approx. 40hp) Seat supports will properly accomodate my seat belts. Pedals will be switched to floor mount Battery and PCM will be relocated from the passenger side shelf to the area directly in front of the passenger footwell. With all this, new rear skin and hood / nose will be fabricated. There are many more details. I will post pics later...

MHKflyer52
I though it was already called the "FRANKLIN7" that was a Rotus in a previous life.

EburgE
You could start calling it a Mazda, but that would really confuse everyone.

slngsht
Some pics as promised... This is my friend Shau-Chi. He and I go back about 20 years. Knowing me, he figured if he sits there long enough, he will eventually have a complete car around him from the parts I'm removing from my car http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/2031562458_CIMG2033.JPG This is a "before" shot of my oil pan problem... By lifting the motor higher in the chassis, I will be able to drop the chassis and lower CG http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/635943986_CIMG2030.JPG This is how it will look when done. Look Ma, no pan! http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1713270052_CIMG2036.JPG This shows how far the seat will move back in the chassis. The roll bar and back plane will move back too. If you look carefully, you will see a horizontal member about the height of the tunnel, and about 6" behind the plane of the roll bar. That's where the back plane will move to. Engine and tranny will move back about 3-4" as well. I don't have a pic of that. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1160196666_CIMG2034.JPG Arya has already started fab on the new tunnel. when done, it'll be 3" higher than before, and will tie into the major chassis cross members in front and back. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1753804673_20071216_233628_1.jpg

I have ordered carbon fiber cloth for mine that I'm going to vacuum bag a few parts with. I was there last weekend for the cutting ceremony. I will be there 4 or 5 days with family over the holidays. Will probably go a couple more times in Jan / Feb... but this is mostly the Arya show as far as fabrication goes.
Al N.
If you're not careful, it could turn into a Se7en rock crawler. BTW, be sure to get your work done by Spring. I think we have another photo shoot to do....

I think we have another photo shoot to do.... I've put in a remote internet camera in the shop to make sure he keeps his offroad parts away from my car  ... and Arya is aware of the spring deadline. The hood is in question, but I'm pretty sure the rest of the car will be operational.

slngsht
Mazda: What are you getting Arya for Christman?:bigears: His present is currently being used to lift my engine (2 ton collapsable engine hoist). But since he is a starving college kid and a good nephew, I'm also paying him a little $ for the work.
slngsht
Starting work on the backplane... Dual tubes will run across the top. These will have a plate on top to serve as upper shock mount and seat belt mount. Rollbar will also mount to this point. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1217000745_shockmount.jpg A single, similarly bent tube will run in line with the transmission tunnel tubes. Tranny tunnel tubes will connect to it, and braces will run back to the back of the frame (right behind the axle from there) diagonally this shows the tranny tunnel top tubes and the back top tubes http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/218108108_shockmount2.jpg
Arya Ebrahimi
The two tubes will be plated with 1/8" and then sleeves will be drilled and welded in for the seat belt mounts. The coilovers will also be tied in to the same plate. Meanwhile the new rollcage will be welded to the top of this plate and appropriately gusseted to the frame structure.
