Arya Ebrahimi
The rollbar is now completely bent into shape and all I have to do is cut the offending chassis tubes/sheetmetal out of my way so that it can be tacked into place. I also fitted the bent tube shown earlier to the chassis and tacked it in place. Lastly I narrowed up the upper control arm mounts at the chassis as they were interfering with the relocation of the seats rearward. Not bad for 4 hours work I don't think. Hopefully I will be able to knock out the rest of it tomorrow and really have some good progress shots to show of the rear. Ary
solder_guy
This is more proportional to the size of the car and engine! this shows a comparison of rollbar heights
EburgE
Mazda, this looks like an awesome Christmas present for your brother. http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com/chat/showpost.php?p=6631&postcount=4 http://s26.photobucket.com/albums/c127/TheLyinKing1/Dax%20Rush%20Lotus/ After his work on your car is done, of course. Arya Ebrahimi
What? A high-powered, mini version of the Franken7? Rob lol Well, Mazda thinks I'm nuts, but I wanna try all wheel drive. Probably using a WRX donor car  We shall see though. Won't necessarily be a 7, just a homebuilt sports car of some sort. I have some more detailed pics of the work I've been doing and will post them in a few. Ary
Arya Ebrahimi
Got to work on the upper control arm(UCA) brackets the other night. They were a bit too wide to allow the seats to go as far back as we wanted, so I narrowed them a bit. Before http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/859434984_UCA brackets and rollbar 005 (Medium).jpg After http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1385181293_UCA brackets and rollbar 004 (Medium).jpg Now that I could move the seat back to where I needed it, I set to work on the rollbar. We decided to take the rollbar down into the chassis as far as reasonably possible. This mean the removal of a couple chassis members. Before http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1330242698_UCA brackets and rollbar 008 (Medium).jpg After http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1321658136_UCA brackets and rollbar 009 (Medium).jpg Once that was done, it was time to address where the rollbar will intersect the existing chassis. Following the basic rules of chassis fabrication we intersected it at a node (juncture of several chassis members) for ultimate stress distribution. The problem was landing a 1.75" round tube on the corner of 1" square tubes left a bit to be desired. Therefore I cut out a few gussets and welded them in. Before http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1613571769_UCA brackets and rollbar 014 (Medium).jpg After http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/910580112_UCA brackets and rollbar 016 (Medium).jpg Now the rollbar has a nice place to tie into http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/224044141_UCA brackets and rollbar 020 (Medium).jpg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/451863525_UCA brackets and rollbar 021 (Medium).jpg And here's a nice overall shot of the "basket handle" as Mazda calls it http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1456094792_UCA brackets and rollbar 011 (Medium).jpg I got a bit more done last night, but have to go to work now. Let me know if you guys appreciate seeing this type of stuff or if I should just stick to fabricating Ary
MHKflyer52
Hi Ary, Keep posting the photos as I think everyone likes seeing the progress as long as it dose not take away from the re-building of the car. Whattype of bender due you have as the bends you have made look good in the photos....just woundering.
Arya Ebrahimi
Thanks for the comments. The bender is made by a company called JDSquared. www.jd2.com The bender is around 300 and each die(for different radius and diameter bends) are about 300. It is a manually operated bender, but I'm planning to convert it to an electrically powered hydraulic setup soon. Ary
S1Steve
Arya, My 16 year old son and I are reviewing what you are doing. He is a BIG fan of the seven type car, he and I have been on some good blasts in our 7, with it's Zetec. Now he has seen one with a V8, and it has him thinking what your uncles must be like. As I dropped him of for work tonight, he said " Can I get him a ride in that thing"? Keep the photo's and details of what you are doing posted, WE LIKE THEM Good Work !!!!! Arya Ebrahimi
Steve, glad to hear we're inspiring young minds. I'm sure Mazda would be happy to give him a ride. Just tell him not to eat a real big meal before the ride I can't wait to get the car going again. It was previously physically impossible for me to drive the car. With all of these mods it should be borderline comfortable for me to drive
S1Steve
Arya, Being 6' 4" and 235 , I feel for you . I been cramming myself in cars all my life. :banghead: But it's worth it !!!!

Just tell him not to eat a real big meal before the ride ... i've been a passenger. uphill. on twisties. in the dark. in what can loosely be called Franken7's passenger seat because Mazda had to do some more modding since there was some free time before the autoX. this is what it felt like. for about 3 minutes of about 3 minutes of motoring. http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t214/ls2sam/8wjhvs.gif yeah its that good. slngsht
Well, just got back from spending 5 days at Snowshoe. Between running up and down the mountain, kids' ski lessons, playing poker, etc... hardly worked on the car at all. While I was there we removed both side skins, exhaust manifolds and motor mounts. The plan for motor mounts is in place, so it's on Arya's plate to do his magic. Looks like the new pedals will fit fine, and the header will work after some modifications. Arya Ebrahimi
Rob, please refresh my memory on what measurements you needed again? I remembered that you needed measurements about 30 mins after I left snowshoe yesterday. I'm in NH now visiting my girlfriend, but I'll be back at snowshoe on Friday. If you just post in here, I'll be more likely to remember them, as I check this post frequently. Sorry for the delays. Ary
slngsht
Well, it's been a long time. Finally, Arya and I were able to converge on the car. He did most of the work, and I did most of the nodding. We got alot done. We started working Friday night, and will put in a few more hours tomorrow. Here are some pics: Roll bar starting to take shape. Also notice the first tube of new trunk. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1406949415_Rotus 001 (Small).jpg Back braces in place http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/768390443_Rotus 006 (Small).jpg Say goodbye to the old trunk http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1525320606_Rotus 009 (Small).jpg Say hello to the new trunk http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/160846235_Rotus 012 (Small).jpg Many more things to do, but it's past 3AM and I'm beat...
