Hi,

Went for a drive this morning with the top off , went well until a fuel leak. AAA was called to tow me home . AAA ask me to call the local fire company, towing company would not put it on the flat bed unless the fire company was on stand bye. Then the police came, Fun was had by all.http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1961456497_Easter Break down 003.jpghttp://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1004566343_Easter Break down 005.jpg

I think the gas tank has a big crack in it. Ah, the joys of ownership.

Happy Easter, Steve

PS, Yes that's the local fire men giving me the " Your number one Steve" Sign

 I had to look close for that one!

Sorry though you had the problem, but at least there was no fire.

heh... on the Skyline trip a couple of years ago, we all got pulled over. The officer walks up to my car and says "Sir, are you aware your car is leaking gas?" I asked if I could get out and check it. I had just filled up, and the tank had developed a crack right at the filler neck.

After we were all done, rolled it off the puddle and went on my way. After the top part of the tank leaked out, it stopped leaking until I got home. I replaced the whole tank. There were no electrical or moving mechanical devices near the leak area to worry about.

Your version is much more dramatic though.

Man I can sympathis with you on a split fuel tank. That is a horrible feeling when you find the problem.

On the 1 lap of 06 we had left Mid America with a 1031 miles ahead of us. We were already a little behind due to a battery cell shorting out. So we topped off our tanks with fuel and had the hammer down. We got about 40 miles down the road and I noticed that our freshly filled gas gauge was at 1/2 a tank. I told Kevin we might have a problem we stopped and I got out and to my horror sound fuel flowing freely at about a 1/2 gallon a min flowing out of the car. Quick inspection found a 2 1/2 in crack in the welded seem on the bottom of the tank. Why have the seem on the bottom instead of the top ? I dont know. I didnt make the tank. Apparently whom ever did make it didnt consider that a possibility.

So our delima is we have a cracked aluminum tank with 975 miles to our destination and about 14 hrs to get there. So we unstrapped the tank stood it on its side so the crack was on top. We used ratchet straps to hold it in place and drove to the next town. We found a well stocked Ace Hardware store. We purchased 36 grit sandpaper, paint thinner and epoxy putty gas tank repair. We roughed it up good and cleaned it up good with the paint thinner and applied the putty let it dry for about an hour and then set the tank back down. No leak. We patted ourselves on the back for a good patch on the fly.

We loaded back up Kevin driving again determined to make up for lost time. We get about 30 miles down the road when we pulled over by a guy in a big funny hat that didnt appear to be very happy with our rate of transport.

Apparently he had meet some of our competitors earlier (125 in a 70)leaving him in a generous mood with his ticket book.

Good news was the patch held for several days then had to be repeated somewhere in West Virgina.

Common bar soap rubbed into the crack makes an effective temporary sealer for gas tanks. Used it many times when I was a poor kid and couldn't afford a new tank.

Soap is for gas and bananas for coolant.
