haiku88
I tried making one from plexiglass, first cut it to fit the roll bar, buffeting was not reduced and might actually be slightly worse. Today cut it down to 8" and it is maybe a little better. Has anyone made or bought one that works better? Is mesh maybe better than something solid? Dave W
I tried a wind blocker last fall and found the same thing. It was slightly worst with the blocker. I did not try cutting it down. I open up holes in the back, but it did not help. I do have winglets on the side of the windshield, which does help. Dave W:7drive:

haiku88
thanks to all for the info, sounds like blockers don't work well w/o the side curtains, and I rarely drive with mine. I did find a little info at Blat Chat, a British firm makes a fabric blocker that supposedly works well, will try experimenting with something similar...attached a photo from the supplier http://www.softbitsforsevens.co.uk/page39a.html http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1617659679_wpbbb73507_1b.jpg
Cherik
..it's a function of driving a lot of miles without sidescreens... Eventually your senses will re-adjust and you will experience the buffeting as comforting. I found -33dB earplugs (Walgreens) give me a sense that there is a lot less wind in the cockpit. sdca7
I replaced my windscreen with an aeroscreen. It is much quieter and smoother driving with it than with the windshield. I can even wear a baseball cap while driving! Of course, I'm sure I'll eventually catch a rock in my teeth, so I can't recommend it for highway use! southwind25
i can remember catching a few rocks, when we raced with a shorty screen..thank god for the full face helmet i was wearing.... KAPOW!! ((hey we like the checker theme on the bonnet, very cool, and yeah we have stated to wear the earplug on the windward side.))
pksurveyor
SDCA7: I noticed the petty strut on your Caterham. Do you leave it on all the time? Does it get in your way or the passenger's way during street driving?
sdca7
I take the petty strut off for street use - it is right in the passenger's face. I catch a lot of gravel to the face when racing too, but so far nothing on the road. Those darn EVO's and WRX's like to cut corners on our tracks, putting up a cloud of sand every time they do! I only drive it short distances on the street, and not too much on the highway. Justin
pi7ot
I still have the rear exit exhaust on my Birkin. I had a Gila tinted polycarbonate rear window screen left over from a 1977 Camaro. I trimmed a wind deflector out of it for the Birkin. It really cut down on the exhaust fumes back drafting into the cock pit , but did little or nothing to ease the noise and buffeting. The rear wings are responsible for the buffeting, imo. I think I would like some side screens. m
southwind25
We just finished making our birkin 7 into a side exit exhaust...what a HUGE diffrence!! it was easy to do with a little tig welding. We are only sorry we didnt do it earlier....no more clothes smelling terrible when we get somewhere. we placed it so it's not a burn hazard when you get out either (well unless you try) of course the side exhaust does kick up a little dust now and again.. Mary also made a couple 1/2 side curtians for the car. nothing more than some sunbrella material cut-sewn-and snapped onto the existing snap points. they are flexible enough so that they dont restrict or bother your driving, yet dont flap around either. they weigh a few oz's if that. they work great and look nice as well. Yesterday I fitted the mesh wind blocker from a BMW Z3 to the rollbar on my Birkin. Did a hundred miles. No reduction in wind noise, but more exhaust fumes backdrafting into the cockpit. :_deadhorse: Looks like the solution to the wind noise/buffeting will be sidescreens that are high enough that your elbows are almost perpendicular to your torso. m

nleroux7
I did try a wind blocker inside the rollbar of my Birkin... and the wind was WORST than ever. I think most of the wind comes from air hitting the rear fender and coming right at my face (upwards).
