Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere on the site but as a soon to be owner does any one have any advice on registration of a 7 in CT

Hi Paul. I just had my Birkin inspected and registered in the fall of '07 so I'm very familiar with the process and requirements. I'd be glad to help you out with anything you need. I'm busy tonight, but I'd be happy to talk to you anytime after that. One good thing is you don't have to pass emissions as of 7/1/07.

Yesterday I finally got my tags from DMV. The only reason is that my general manager's wife works there (thanks Jen).

 

I thought this video might describe my experience with the DMV managment team!

DMV was relatively easy in Georgia for my 1981 Rotus .. No emissions required .. Only concern that the guy had was what classification .. He ended choosing "Prestige Automobile" ...

New to the forum, but maybe I can help on this. I registered a Caterham in CT in April of this year. Being a kit car, CT considers these "composite vehicles". If your car is titled, you won't need to go through a composite vehicle inspection, just a VIN check. I had a NY title and know of another Caterham in the Hartford area that had a MA title; no inspection. CT makes it pretty easy. You are also exempt from emissions. Hope that helps.

Doug - thanks, thats good to hear - will let every one know how it goes. The car was orginally MA titled but now is VA, so we'll see.

I don't know what happened with me, but I had a clear Michigan title and VIN for my Birkin and I still had to go through the inspection process. :ack: I sure hope you don't have to do the inspection Paul.

Bruce, I would have thought CT DMV treats all state titles as equal....maybe not. Perhaps they view NY and MA as "friendly" neighbors. MI (your title) was on the "UNION" side in the civil war...right?

Not sure what happened Doug. Perhaps it was my wife Nancy (formerly from Ky - border state but really a Confederate state) that pissed off the DMV worker...she has a habit of doing that! Hopefully Paul can follow in your footsteps and get it done in the easiest manner possible. It'll be interesting to hear how he makes out.

So after a short holiday here's my up date on registration in CT -- I took delivery of Sandy's/SteveT's Seven a couple of weeks ago. I was able to get a temporary registration subject to emissions which it promptly failed as the DMV computer system couldn't match it to an existing car - both VIN and model. I kind of knew this would happen but at least I was on the road and driving. After numerous phone calls to DMV I got the advice that I had to get a composite inspection which in CT is only done in one place and requires a taking the car by trailer

Long story short but a very helpful DMV inspector, who after much debate and discussion with senior officers (they are DMV police with guns which I find slightly odd!) basically did a VIN inspection (which took some finding as its under the steering wheel) and passed her. So we are now legal and motoring.

 

Have added a 7 grill and as far a I am concerned the essential map pocket.

Not as easy as what I went through, but I suppose it's the results that count. A couple days ago I posted a little history on my sevens, old and new along with a couple pictures in the "tell us about yourself" section. If you or Bruce would like to get together some weekend for diner food in a neutral town to swap stories, please let me know. Never met Bruce, but Wolcott is just up line from me and Old Greenwich about the same distance southwest on I95.
