redbaron
OK guys, I need some advice on tires for my Rotus. I currently run 205/45 ZR16 Goodyear Eagle GT on 16 x 8.5 in rims. Although they have minimal wear I feel that since they are some 14 years old they are due for replacement. Also, I would like to take advantage of the technical advances in current tread patterns and material compounding. For asthetic reasons I wish to retain my current rims and I would prefer to use the same size tire all around. Obviously, the current Z rated tires are extreme "overkill" in this department. I am not concerned about tire wear so I would like a tire that would maximize handling should I desire to autocross the car.
slngsht
I've been using Toyo Proxes RA1 with pretty much the same objectives as yours. I originally had Nitto 550, and these offer ALOT more grip (as expected). I have not tried other popular tires like the Avon.
Boxologist
on an 8.5" wide wheel 205mm sounds VERY VERY thin. 205 is normally used on a 6.5-7" wheel. i found 245-45-16 has some results on tirerack. Avon m500 ($98) and Continental contisportcontact ($167) may be best outside of an R compound. tirerack soes not carry the avon cr500 as far as i know. JohnCh
The Toyo T1R is a decent non-R compound tire for a se7en. They are very light and have softer sidewalls compared to conventional high performance tires -- two attributes that are good on a very light car. This >link will take you to the available sizes, recommended rim widths, and tire weights. -John
redbaron
Oops! Sorry guys but I goofed on the rim size. They are 1992 Ford Mustang OEM aluminum wheels and are 16 x 7, 4 bolt, 5 spoke wheels. I should have caught that when I looked up the recommended rim widths for the 205/45x16 tire size. soareyes
I agree with John on the Toyo T1R's. In my size (195/50/15 fronts and 225/50/15 rears) they are 4 to 5 pounds lighter than similar performance tires from Goodyear (F1's) and Bridgestone (SO3 pole positions) (if you can believe their web site specs!). I've been happy with mine for mostly street use. Stan
