ottocycle
I am playing with the Heretic and going through the process of lowering the engine for hood clearance reasons. What I want to know is how low your oil pan is. What clearance do people have between the road surface and the bottom of the oil pan and have you bottomed it? I remember Mazda telling me what clearance he is running but cannot remember. Any takers? Cheers- Dermot.
slngsht
well, my sump USED to hang about 3" below the frame, and I though that was a disaster waiting to happen. So I ran my frame about 5.5" from the ground with 2.5" of oil pan clearance. On the redesign I made the engine flush with the bottom by raising it in the frame. Now I run the ride height at about 3.5".
Hank
I run a MEGABUSA with a dry sump system so my oil pan doesn't protrude below the frame. [picture]
scannon
My Caterham oil pan has 2.5" of ground clearance without me in the car. I found some small scratches in the fins the last time I changed the oil. I think I did those getting into my previous trailer. I am used to driving a lowered Miata with about the same clearance but more front overhang so I am very careful around speed bumps and the like. DB6
I have 2.5 on the pan , and 3 on the gear box armour ring. First thing I bottomed out on, (and ripped the honey comb off) was the side exhuast on the ramp in to the local post office. One thing to note as well, the clearance is def, lower with 2 ppl in the car than one( yeah I know it is obvious) , as I learnt with my son in the car going to the local Subway, nothing worse than hearing that scrrrrrreeeeeech. The closer it is to the ground the bigger the man. Edited March 4, 2009 by DB6
drew...
about 2.5" with no one in the car - caterham S3 with SVT motor - I did have to machine down the motor mounts a quarter inch to get the variable cam timing solenoid to clear the hood during construction. I have also lowered my floors 70mm - which hangs ME right down there with the oil pan!

Alaskossie
Gert, How much does that armor weigh, anyway?? That looks like the forestry skid plate I'm installing on my M-B Unimog 406, at about 85 lb.!

drew...
basically fabricated an aluminum cake pan with 1/2" tapered sides and replaced the flat section from the 1" square tube in front of the seats to the rear upright wall of the cockpit. three sides of the pan attach to the holes that formerly held the flat floor in place. The front of the pan attaches to the rear vertical surface of the brace in front of the seat.
Alaskossie
Slngsht, Can't help my fascination with odd mechanicals... (Somebody please stop me, before I buy again....!!). In addition to the 'Mog 406 double-cabin, I've got a Land-Rover-based 1990 MWG Esarco 8X8 truck with 4-wheel steering (one of 3 built) and on its way from Germany is my "new" pickup, a 1975 Volvo 6X6 303 truck. (BTW, slngsht, why is it that when I try to draft a reply to this thread, I click on the "reply" text box and right away the text box closes and I get a number of full-screen ads for the Brunton Stalker? (Not that I've got anything against the Stalker....) Anybody else have that problem???

Alaskossie
DB6, Well, you asked for it... attached are photos of the 1990 8X8 Esarco, the 1980 Unimog 406 Doka (former German air force aircraft tug, 22-ton towing capacity!), and the 1975 Volvo 304 6X6 pickup (presently in transit). Can't wait to take a photo of my finished Seven next to (under?) these babies....
