KiwiBirkin
Hi all I had my car on axel stands today while I was changing my tyres, I was haveing a look in the engine bay under the car and have discoverd a pipe leading to no where with a 90 deg bend on it, I cant see any pipes it has come off and im stumped. I have traced it back to other parts of the car and have taken photos of the part of the system it belongs too. Ok the first picture is part of the system this pipe is connected too, the black pipe connects too a steel pipe running the length of my transmission tunnel and is under the main fuel line pipe, it connect to a T connector (red) with the clear upward pipe heading to a ali tank seen in the next picture, the thru part of the T heads off to the pipe with no connection and I would like to know about this pipe and what it should be connected too. http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/Hotdognz/bits%20and%20pieces/whatsthis5.jpg So this is the small ali tank that the clear pipe from the T runs into, then there is another clear pipe on top of the ali tank that runs off to the top of the rocker cover, the black pipe of the ali tank runs into a T and a clear pipe branches of that and up into the rocker cover by the R in Birkin the other part of that black pipe runs into the engine just behind the fuel pump. http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/Hotdognz/bits%20and%20pieces/whatsthis2.jpg http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/Hotdognz/bits%20and%20pieces/whatsthis3.jpg This is the pipe that goes to no where and i cant see any connector for it and its sitis under the webbers and isnt very long. its blowing air out when the engine is running. http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/Hotdognz/bits%20and%20pieces/whatsthis.jpg I havent done any thing to my engine since I got the car, I havent pulled any pipes of any thing and the car starts up and runs fine. Anyone know what it is and where it should go ?? __________________ KiwiBirkin Edited May 12, 2009 by KiwiBirkin
Ian7
Looks at first glance to be a complex air/oil separator breather device. The two lines off the side of the rocker cover are the biggest hint, with the "air blowing out while engine is running" is second clue. Does the small alloy tank look like it has a drain, or even better, a removable cover maybe to clean out the 'filter' (or whatever else might be inside)? Ian7
oops, forgot to add, the red outlet should feed into a catch tank that you can drain occasionally, or just secure it to the underside of the car for auto-rust-proofing :-)
KiwiBirkin
Cheers Ian7 it was the breather it had just come lose from its tie down point.
southwind25
We have a Birkin with the 1600 as well, we fabricated a drainable alum catch tank and placed it in front of the passenger (starboard) side footwell. iI wouldnt just allow the line to breathe into plain air, because it seems mine will breathe out nearly a pint of oil every few hundred miles. We also have a crank trigger ignition, so we use the old distributor hole for a breather as well now.
