southwind25 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Has anyone here updated there old narrow track BirKin, to the new wider track kit available? wondering how hard it would be to fabricate this myself?
11Budlite Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Robert - I know it comes with new control arms, uprights, anti-roll bar, cross-member, and hoses/hardware so there'd be a fair amount of fabrication. Here's a link to an OZ thread on the subject with pictures of the parts in the kit: http://www.oz-clubbies.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4589&hl=redraven I know Folis J on the Birkinowners list has updated his car to the wide track suspension so you might want to search there as well. I'm not sure what the price of the kit is, but a quick call to Dick Brink should get you that info.
Birkin42 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I have the kit but as my car is now where near ready for the road yet, I can't report on how it works. I considered fabricating the parts myself but found the factory kit to be a good enough value just to buy it and save the time. I ordered my kit direct from the factory long before Dick started bringing them in. I also know that Walt from the Birkin Owners forum made his own. The nice thing with the factory kit is that it comes with new uprights that use stronger ball joints. The one thing I really don't like with the kit is the anti-roll bar and connecting links. On my list of things to do is look into a better arrangement for this. Jack
southwind25 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Posted June 4, 2009 Thanks this was a great help.... Thanks gary for the PM as well. let me know if you continue with your changes! I have noticed the car understeers ALLOT in my opinion,, of course the bakalite hard tires i run dont help matters much. i also think i have the camber set as far as i can go right now with the existing setup. 2,500 is allot for the kit... i have a tig and mig welder... might be a winter project if i can find the right a-arm tubing.

I run a Birkin and understeer is very rare and only when I drive it improperly. What kind of camber are you running? When do you experience the understeer? On corner entry, exit or is is steady state in a sweeper type turn? Dave
pi7ot Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 My Birkin on R comps is quite responsive to tyre pressure adjustment. If I run 2 up it has deadly understeer , so I raise the rear pressures by 1.5-2 psi to regain the neutral handling balance. You may have excessive front neg camber. The front tyres have too small a contact patch. m
southwind25 Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 well, the bowling ball hard tires dont help.. but thats what budget allows at the moment. I am running as much positive camber as i can adjust to.. which seems barley 1 degree if that. The understeer is usually entry not power induced.
