windscreen and radar detector help needed

Dan,

If you're running the short aeroscreen you will be removing the windsheild wipers therefore you would not need the washer spray nozzle in the center of the scuttle. If you remove that and install a rubber grommet you have a hole to pass a wire behind the dash.

well i took out the washer fluid nozzle to feed the wire through for the remote display and the connector for the wire is bigger then the nozzle hole. should i gradually drill it bigger until it goes through? also once its through what should i use to protect the wire from rubbing on the edge of the body?

Before you drill it larger, get to the hardware store and get a selection of rubber grommets. Note the inside the groove diameters and then start drilling in those sizes until the connector goes through.

You will have to stretch the grommet to get it over the connector. Try to get a grommet that meets both the inside diameter so the wire is snug and the groove diameter so it fits the hole.

The Green piece is for illumination of the ring around the power socket at night .. so you connect that to the gauge illumination.

The other two connections are for ground and +12v. Most are fused and connected to +12v switchable to off when the ignition is turned off. Determine which connection is which with a multimeter before wiring it in.

Have you tried a search for power sockets on blatchat? Here is one that shows where Caterham installed one, http://www.su77on-se7ens.com/35479.html. A quick look at the wiring diagrams in my assembly guide doesn't show a power outlet. I'll bet there is not a standard location or wiring plan, the mechanic who installed it chose the location and wired it as he saw fit. I placed mine under the dash near the fuse box and wired it through a fuse to the positive terminal of the battery, this way I can use it to connect my battery charger when in the garage. If you do it this way be sure to use a grommet where the wire runs through the fire wall and leave off the illumination ring so you do not drain the battery. Mike

Where do i find these at?!

And my fuse box has no open space. there are fuses in every hole.

im am very new to work with the electrical system, so the more help the better. working on the electrical system just gives me a headache. i do have a fluke 87 though for any testing

MNlotus,

No disrespect intended, but I think from your questions that you have limited automotive electrical experience and it would be wise to pay someone who has that knowledge to install this for you. I don't think the manufacturer intended to provide electrical feeds specifically for a cigarette lighter in your car.

Someone will need to ferret out a candidate for the power supply and wire into it, especially if you want it to turn off the power when you turn off the ignition switch.

You have a rather expensive toy here and it would be a shame if it burned up or had significant electrical damage if you don't have the skills to do it correctly. It is not a simple plug and play. It is also not a particularly difficult thing to do for someone who has those skills. Don't risk it to save a few bucks.

really, thanks for answering one question, know i know there are no leads. i know the basics of electrical, i have taken electricity classes on two different occasions. all i need for this to work is a ground wire and a +12v wire. is it really that hard to put in? im just wondering where i can find a +12v wire and which ones best to use. your right though i dont want to do something wrong and have something bad happen. it doesnt have to turn off with the ignition, i can turn it off and on manually every time. this shouldnt be that hard to do. plus i have no idea where to take my car to let someone else do it.

can anyone else let me know where i can find a +12v wire and ground?

I doubt there are many people who can look at the pictures of the wires under your dash and point to one and say, use this one. I do recall seeing a couple of unused connectors hanging down somewhere the middle of the dash and I would start with them.

Finding a 12v hot lead can be done with a multimeter or a test light. Radar detectors don't like noisy power supplies (and some electronic car parts don't like other items using their power supply) so when you find one you will need to look at the schematic wiring diagram to figure out what else is on that circuit. If you can't find one then you can run one directly from the battery with a proper sized fuse and wire. As mentioned before, be very careful where you run it through the firewall and use a rubber or plastic grommet to prevent shorts.

I'd suggest you use a 12v switched hot lead as sooner or later you will forget to turn off the detector and if car sits for a few days the battery will be flat when you want to use the car again. Turn your key on while looking and then confirm that the 12v goes away when you turn the key off.

A ground is easy to find, just look around for a (usually) black wire that is attached to something metal and piggyback your ground with it, Use a multimeter to confirm that it is in fact a good ground to the battery negative. Or you can run your own ground direct from the battery.

alright i got the test light out and started pokin around. the bottom two fuses on the fuse block turn on and off with ignition. would i be a able to tap it from the back for a hot lead or should i use a different fuse?

i dont know what all the fuses are for, anyone know what all the fuses are for and what would be a safe one to tap that wouldnt be bothered by the detector?

also with my test light i found that the bolts that hold on the windshield/windkick is a ground. couldnt i just hook up the ground from here to the cig lighter, or should i not use the chassis as a ground?

just got my detector wired in! it works too, doesnt get blocked by the windkick! i got it wired to my ignition so it turns on when the ignition is turned on. I got the remote display mounted on my dash. no more tickets now!

i have one more question though. i want to get the carbon fiber side mirrors, im tired of not being able to see behind me. how would they connect to the car?

Mine are bolted to the windshield frame and the Brooklands screen frame. You have no such frame.

There are many clever folks here who could build an entire car, from scratch, around the carbon fiber mirrors so I will let them chime in.

And, perhaps start a new thread? The mirror question is way off topic.
