Taber10 Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 And since it doesn't have the suspension attachment points yet, would you have to learn AL welding to complete? Is that hard?
scannon Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 The Ebay ad says it is one of three ali frames produced. This one is new old stock. Makes you wonder how well the other two survived and why he never sold it back when it was produced. There must be a reason why he didn't continue with the ali frame.

Just my 2 cents worth but I would suspect that the expense of making the frame and all the necessary parts to mount suspension components was much more expensive to build and would even be that way today. I would also suspect that to repair one of those frames would also cost a lot more than a steel frame. When you get down to the weight and strength of steel tubing to the amount of aluminum you need to have the same strength and rigidity of the steel tubing you usually have about twice the aluminum to achieve the same stiffness and rigidity of the steel I do believe from my experiences.
slngsht Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 well, i've seen 2 Rotus aluminum frames in person at Dennis' shop, so yes, they are aluminum. One frame (I believe this one) has larger cross section aluminum tubing to offer equivalent strength to the steel tube. The other one, actually had different cross section tubes, some rectangular, and was re-engineered specifically for use of aluminum. That's all I know. I agree with Martin... you better be handy with welding aluminum to take this project on.
solder_guy Posted November 5, 2009 Author Posted November 5, 2009 (edited) auction removed with several days left ... ?? either Dennis sold it locally .. or didn't get any bids or interest .. Edited November 5, 2009 by solder_guy
