E ticket take off

Having spent my time in third world countries on overloaded, no safety, poorly trained pilots and survived 2 crash landings - 1 in Indonesia in a 737 and 1 in PNG in a Beechcraft - that sent shivers up my spine.

China Air (Taiwanese Airline) does not have a great safety reputation - they have lost a fair number of planes over the year. They are on my do not fly list.

From listening to the Japanese news service, it happened at a Japnese airport. From what I could work out with my rusty Japanese the pilot set the wrong takeoff weight in the flight computers so that inadequate thrust was applied for take off. These days, modern aircraft dont just shove the throttles to full and go, they only use the amount of power computed by the engine for the weight of the aircraft - less wear, safer overall.

Landed in Cancun a few years ago in a tropical storm . On the third try to land, the right wing, were we were seated, was hit by lighting. Like a Big Arc flash. When the plane touched down , it turned side ways so I could see up the end of the runway. People screaming, guy next to my wife throws up all over the place. We stopped with the wing hanging over the end of the runway. As we got off the plane the cockpit door was open, the three pilots were slumped over in their seats. For the first time in my life , I thought, Thats it, this were we will be killed. I hope we never have a second scare like Mike.

Airbus has had some bad problems, with computers, not allowing the pilot to control the power.

This is the best story told to me by a person on departing Mexico. The A/C had some issues and after hours of repairs, the flight crew refused to fly it, so they got another crew. I was told they didn't time out either. The fool said he was several hours late due to this!

Small correction, China Air is not Taiwan's airline.

It is the national airline of Communist China, and a branch of the Chinese Air Force. And, yes, they have a terrible safety record.

But then again, with a billion people packed into the country whats a couple hundred here or there?
